Once again the class was in a normal classroom today. Kitty would get over her Danger Room thing at some point but it would not be this week.

"This is probably one of the most important lessons you're going to have here," she began, "because today we're going to work on budgeting. By now you should have an income, and that means you have to pay for how you live. First off, I want to have you list off the things that you think will be monthly expenses, like rent. Anything else you have to pay for to live. Just go ahead and yell things out."

Once they'd done that, Kitty continued, "These monthly expenses are important, and take first priority. If you don't pay your rent, you'll end up being evicted. If you don't pay your utilities, they'll turn them off. If you don't pay your car insurance, you'll get in trouble with the law if you get caught. And what you have left over after you pay all that stuff is called expendable income. It's what you get to use if you want to hang out with friends, or save up for vacation or whatever. So what we're going to do today is work out a budget. Let's say... you've got an even $2000 a month to work with. I'm going to give you a bunch of handouts. Pick an rent price off one of them, I don't care which one, and then check out prices on utilities, and then fill out this worksheet. Put down what you pay for your phone, if you use Netflix, if you have any medical expenses that need to be paid every month. Just figure out what you got and then we'll talk about it."

What expenses do you think need to get paid every month? Yell 'em out and Kitty'll put them on the board.

"Groceries," Flick chimed in after a moment. "You need food."

"Yep, definitely," Kitty said, writing it down. "And how much would you say it'd cost for a month's worth of food?"

"For just one person?" Flick thought about it for a moment. "Maybe a hundred bucks if you go generic."

"Telephone," Cosette added, because Flick had already brought up groceries anyway. "I know it sounds frivolous but particularly if one is living alone and needs to stay in contact with others it's quite important."

She paused and smiled. "As I've come to understand."

"I wouldn't say a phone is frivolous at all," Kitty told her. "It's actually considered a utility. So that runs about how much a month, do you think?"

"Well, I certainly don't think I could live without mine any more, but so many things we think of as necessities would have been luxuries in my time," Cosette conceded. "As for how much . . ."

She frowned as she looked up rates, because inflation notwithstanding she still had to wince reflexively at those figures.

"Ninety dollars a month?" That might be one of the lower figures, too. Ouch. "Less if you only intend to use it to make and receive calls, I suppose."

"Sounds about right. Could go more, too, depending on your data plan, but that sounds about average," Kitty said, writing that down too. "Terrifying as that is."

"I could wait and only look up things when I get home," Cosette said uncertainly, "rather than use so much data, but . . ."

But that was almost like being cut off from the world and it was a horrifying prospect.

"No judgment here," Kitty assured her. "And there are times you'd be out somewhere and need information right away, or need your GPS, and pretty much this is just the world we live in now."

"I thought, at first, that it was funny we had an entire class devoted to being a grownup," Cosette said with a slight smile. "And now I understand why. It's much harder than I thought, especially if I'm to stay here."

"Transportation," Raven said, after a little bit of considering. "A car or bus fares or a bike or even I guess shoes? If you're walking everywhere."

Yeah, that last one was a question. Raven didn't actually wear real shoes, after all.

"That makes sense," Kitty allowed, and got out her phone. "So let's check the price of a monthly bus pass in Maryland... Which is $64. A bike's probably cheaper, but it'd suck more in winter months."

She was writing the $64 on the board for the class, though.

Figure out just how in the hole you're gonna be!
