Baking: Sweet and Savory | Monday, 3rd period

"Good morning," Hannibal said when everybody had arrived. "My apologies for last week; I was rather under the weather. This week, we'll be working on something simple and from someplace other than Europe, as requested." He smiled and nodded at the students who'd requested those things.

"Mochi is a traditional Japanese food - it can be a snack on its own, or it can be combined with other things. I have a number of examples here. It has only a few ingredients, and is fairly simple to start, though you do need to be precise and careful."

He pulled up the recipe on one wall and went over it with them. "You may make the plain version, or dress it up however you like. Please feel free to ask me questions if you have them."

"And faces are supposed to stay where faces go," Sparkle replied, pursing his lips a little. "The weekend was just a wild and crazy ride of breaking the rules for everyone, from the sound of it."

Yeah, Spark was willing to be a brat about this.

"... Was it worth it, anyway? I didn't really make many wishes or anything. Sounds like it was sort of a mixed bag for people, though."

"It was." Which answered both questions, really. "I hadn't intended to remove my face, as it happens, but knowing it was temporary made it more of an interesting inconvenience than a tragedy. You wished for a rubber duck?"

That was a waste of wishes, Sparkle!

You wanted a waste of wishes? That was the only wish Sparkle made. Out of five!

"Yeah, but only to see if it really worked," he replied with a shrug. And then it did, so... there it was. I had a rubber duck for like half a day. It squeaked, it was yellow. It floated in the sink. It was pretty much everything I could have asked for, in a rubber duck."

Which was to say, it hadn't been disappointing or an unpleasant surprise at all.

"In that case, I'm happy you enjoyed it." It wasn't what he'd have wished for, clearly, but Sparkle's wishes were his own.

"Yeah." Sparkle snorted and shook his head. "It was great, while it lasted. Which is kind of how I figured that was going to go. Here, have something great but there's always a catch."

"I see impermanence more as a fact of existence than a catch," Hannibal said. "Whether having a thing temporarily is worse than never having it depends largely upon the thing, and the person."

"Yeah, well. Nothing I would have asked for is worth having for just a day," Sparkle replied, shrugging his shoulders a little. "I've got a lot of things I want, but I don't want them right this second. I want them tomorrow. I want them after grad. I want some kind of fu-- some kind of sold ground to stand on, because that's something I've never had, and that's not the sort of thing you can trust to wishing anyway. So instead, I got a duck. A really short-lived duck, but when the duck went away, at least I know it's easy enough to go back out and get another damn duck for myself."

"Very true," Hannibal said. He smiled and patted Sparkle's shoulder. "And the duck will be all the sweeter for it." In a manner of speaking.

"And less temporary," Sparkle agreed. "At least, probably."

There were never guarantees, really. Nothing was permanent. Only varying degrees of fleeting.

"And if not, there will be other ducks," Hannibal said. "And I know a lot of good recipes for duck."

"That would be a way better metaphor if my duck wasn't bright yellow and squeaky," Sparkle pointed out, but he gave a little grin all the same. "But I'll let that slide, this time."

"Thank you," Hannibal said with a grin and a nod. "And I'll remember the squeaky ones aren't for cooking. Although you could probably make a yellow mochi duck."
myownface: (Oh. Crap.)

...

And that was a gasp. Just, outright.

"I'm going to do that now. I'm going to do that right now and the ducks are going to be mango."

Just, you know, because declaring that was important.

"Mango goes well as a mochi flavor," Hannibal said, grinning. "Would you like some help, or would you prefer doing it yourself?"

"I'll take the help if you're offering," Sparkle decided. "I've never actually worked with fresh mango before, I have no idea where to start."

He'd be so dismayed when he realized exactly how much of the inside of the fruit was actually inedible fibers.

... And so covered in mango juice.

"With a sharp knife and a lot of patience," Hannibal said. "Shall we?"
