Baking: Sweet and Savory | Monday, 3rd period

"Good morning," Hannibal said when everybody had arrived. "My apologies for last week; I was rather under the weather. This week, we'll be working on something simple and from someplace other than Europe, as requested." He smiled and nodded at the students who'd requested those things.

"Mochi is a traditional Japanese food - it can be a snack on its own, or it can be combined with other things. I have a number of examples here. It has only a few ingredients, and is fairly simple to start, though you do need to be precise and careful."

He pulled up the recipe on one wall and went over it with them. "You may make the plain version, or dress it up however you like. Please feel free to ask me questions if you have them."

He'd made an assortment, so the students could get an idea of the possibilities. "Some of these are more complex than others; some are more traditional than others. Once you get comfortable with the basic recipe, you can experiment to find what you like."

You better believe Sparkle was making a beeline for the PB&J. Sure, he'd try the rest, too. The pork-filled one was intriguing and the three-colour stuff was kind of neat. But peanut butter. And jelly.

See, that was awesome, right there. And Sparkle was in his happy place.

Hannibal smiled. "I thought you might enjoy that one."

"I'm a sucker for the basics, what can I say?" Sparkle gave Hannibal a cheeky little grin before taking a bite out of another mochi ball. "I never would have thought of putting PB&J into these things, though. This is awesome."

"They're a very versatile snack. Sweet or savory, simple or complicated. And the ingredients aren't expensive, for the most part." Hannibal smiled. "I hope it meets with your approval."

Kathy was only too happy to make herself a plate of mochi to nibble from while she worked on her own.
