The Art of BS [Thursday, January 29, 2015]

"Right, so we have about two weeks until Valentine's Day," Josh said, "which means it's time to find a date for that dance. And BSing--used in small quantities because open and honest communication yadda yadda relationships blah--certainly helps to grease the wheels a bit at the beginning of things."

He gestured to the supplies he'd gathered. "So today I want you to make yourself a Valentine's Day card to give to someone else with words that are flattering but not so over the top that they won't think it's sincere--and then you need to present your proposal for why you'd be a great prospect as a date to the dance. And then you can eat the conversation hearts. Because conversation hearts."

He clapped his hands together. "Okay. Go."

Travis had given Cate a few Valentine's Day cards in his time but nothing in awhile. So...so, he was just going to make something for Hatton. It meant he could be silly about it and Hatton wouldn't take it too seriously and nothing would be awkward.

So, there was copious amounts of glitter being dumped on the heart now.

This, at least, was fun. Kathy could nerd out with the best of them when it came to construction paper crafts. Let's see...an oval of white construction paper with an irregular border and a circle of yellow paper right in the center, and the words I think you're egg-sellent....

Inside, she crumpled up two strips of red paper and put them on little folded paper springs and wrote ...so don't go bacon my heart, okay?

Because if Valentine's Day wasn't a time for puns, when was?

Johnny's card was simple. Plain front with "You're a great girlfriend..." written in neat handwriting - which took effort Inside there was a construction paper heart with construction paper flames and the words, "... I bet you'd be a great Valentine, too."

Nice, simple, sincere, flame theme. The card was a lot like Johnny himself.

Rapunzel agonized over her card. Agonized. In the end, it was both covered in glitter and also pretty well-done -- if there was anything in the world that Rapunzel was good at, after all, it was drawing. And using her hair to heal people. But mostly drawing.

Kaylin didn't understand this whole Valentine's thing, but everyone seemed to be making things with hearts. She'd also never gotten or given a card. They looked kind of like tiny books with just one page - if that one page was heart-shaped with stuff all over it.

Hers was definitely lacking. And misspelled. And said, 'You're a nice person.'

Hey, she tried.

"Uh, I think I'm a pretty nice guy," he said, sounding a little awkward. "Respectful and helpful and the last time something weird happened, I ended up in a tree so I'm not afraid to look ridiculous either."

...Could they go back to last week and have Kathy make three speeches about how awesome she'd been at fighting off flying eels? She'd happily do that, rather than this speech, right now.

"Ummm..." Kathy was going to shift about awkwardly for a few seconds, did that count towards the sales pitch? "Umm, well, I'm single, so you won't have to worry about making anyone angry if we went on a date?"

Yeah, off to a great start here.

"I think K-pop is awesome, so I'm probably not going to make fun of your music taste, no matter how bad it is...puns are one of the highest forms of humor and my idea of a great evening is watching terrible Syfy movies, like Mecha-Octoshark Against Bearzilla, so if you think any of those things are cool, too, we'll probably have a good time?"

Stop making every statement sound like a question, maybe?

"I'm really easygoing and I like trying new things, so no matter what we ended up doing, we'd probably have a good time. Okaythankyouforlistening."

And then Kathy was sitting down in a rush.

Johnny stood up and took off his shirt. "I also have a great sense of humor."

Rapunzel sort of uselessly flailed her beautifully-decorated card -- which, now that she had it, seemed silly since she didn't have anyone to give it to? Oops?

She considered what to say for a few moments, then simply offered, "I will make you cookies, if you're my date."

She was also pretty good at making cookies, in addition to drawing.

"I probably really wouldn't be a good date," Kaylin admitted. "I don't understand what this holiday is and I've never actually been to a dance - or on a date for that matter - so... yeah."

Perhaps she'd confused BS with honesty?

Kathy was mentally replaying her 'sales pitch' and cringing.

She was so bad at this.
