Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were chairs and tables set up all across the lawn; some were by the bonfire, for the people who wanted to be warm and central to everything else at the picnic, and some were set farther away from the action, for the people who wanted more peace and quiet.

There was no escaping the glitter though. Sorry, but not really.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Kaylin waved to her and limped over. "Hey. I told Clint about you, back home. How you could make wings and all? But he didn't believe me."

"I guess I'll have to come visit your world sometime and prove it," Raven said. "I used them to show off my power to my new roommate. So thanks for giving me the idea to try."

"I'm the one who might get to fly with you one day," Kaylin said with a smile. "So you're welcome. And yes, you should come sometime. Though... it doesn't have all the luxuries we have here. But if you don't mind that, you're welcome."

Kaylin rarely took time to sleep or eat there either - even when she had money for food, so there was that as well. Sorry, Raven.

"I don't need a bunch of luxuries," said the girl who grew up in basically a castle.

"Oh. Good then," Kaylin said with a smile. "Then you should come visit. You can meet Teela and Tain and Clint. And maybe Caitlin. But maybe not Marcus. Unless he's in a really good mood."

"Sure," Raven said. "Maybe for spring break."

"All right," Kaylin nodded. "Unless... if we're going somewhere very interesting with the school..."

She might deny it till the cows came home, but she did enjoy the trips.

"Then we'll go the weekend after or something. Or the week. We can miss classes, sometimes."

Miss classes? Kaylin's eyes went huge. "Oh, I don't think that would be good. The missing classes part. Not unless there's some sort of emergency which involves, oh torn off limbs or something. Sleeping during them is one thing, but if they tell Marcus I haven't even gone he might not let me be a Hawk. But a weekend. A weekend would be good."

"Weekend, then." Raven wasn't even going to try to argue with a girl that freaked out by the idea of missing a class. "And then we can go visit my brother sometime, if you want."

If only Marcus and the Hawklord could see her right now they'd be laughing themselves silly at her panic.

"I'd like that," Kaylin said. "He wouldn't mind my coming?"

"Not at all. He'd love to meet you." And maybe hit on her. And ask a million questions about the society where she was from. "It's fun, it's not often my brother gets jealous of what I get to do."

Just so long as he didn't push anything. Kaylin would hate to break his jaw.

"Has he visited here?" she asked. "It must be nice to have him sort of wishing he was you for a change."

"He came to Parents' Weekend my first year here. He'd've come this year, but he had an interview for college."

"He's choosing to do more school?" Kaylin asked, hoping futilely that the sheer horror of that didn't show on her face. "Why?"

Raven shrugged. "He likes it. He's studying genetics. He wants to find out how evolution led to us being the way we are. Not just as humans, but the whole 'I can have wings and he can read minds' thing."

"Huh... does he study about why some people have magic too?" At least those seemed like sort of useful things. If you had to study something.

"He probably would," Raven said. "But my world doesn't have any."

That she knew of.

"Oh..." she thought about that for a moment. "I guess I forget because Elantra has magic even if mages," she spit to the side to express her opinion of them, ' and here has magic, so..."

Kaylin was not a fan of mages. Good to know. "That's fair," Raven said. "It took time to get used to the fact that other worlds do have magic."

"This electricity thing? That's what was hard to figure out. Sometimes I think the magic version is much better, but then we don't have things like the little mirrors - phones, I mean - that you can carry with you."

She patted her pocket where she carried hers. "I like those. And I have to admit having lots of hot water just there to turn on whenever you want. That's wonderful."

"The phones were new for me, too. They haven't been invented yet, when I'm from. We have hot running water, though."

"We have mirrors that you can communicate through," Kaylin explained. "And the big ones store information - written or spoken or pictures or video. If you're rich enough you can afford to get one that connects to some of the bigger information storage, but most people just have ones that let them talk back and forth or leave a message.""

"We have . . . TVs with teeny little black and white screens. And phones that attach to walls and dial with actual dials."

"Dials? Like... sundials?" Kaylin wasn't at all sure how that would work.
