Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were chairs and tables set up all across the lawn; some were by the bonfire, for the people who wanted to be warm and central to everything else at the picnic, and some were set farther away from the action, for the people who wanted more peace and quiet.

There was no escaping the glitter though. Sorry, but not really.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Sparkle, as student body president (that would never not be weird) was here to do his duty to greet the new kids.

With his backpack.

Stuffing things from the food table into it.

"Storing up for winter?" Alana asked, reaching past him to claim an orange. (One orange.) "Hey there. Happy new year and everything."

Ooh, hey. How'd he miss the oranges? Sparkle put two of those into his bag for good measure before he turned a grin Alana's way.

"It's been a long, hungry winter break," he replied easily. "I'm making sure I'm set for the trials and hardships up ahead."

So, the first week of classes. Complete with cafeteria food. Oh no.

"Happy new year and everything to you too, though. How's your break been?"

"Admirable foresight," Alana commended, with a nod that turned into a grin back a moment later. "It's been ... break-y. Going home's a good way to remind yourself why you wanted to go to boarding school, you know?"

She realized Sparkle might not know and shrugged as she went on. "But I got some time to clear my head from the craziness here, so that was good. How was yours?"

Sparkle shrugged, too. He had vague memories of home life, well before school. He would've chosen boarding school over that, too.

"Quiet," he shared. "I did some sightseeing on Coruscant with Atton for a little bit, but Christmas and New Years were all here, complete with the mostly empty island and the more or less avoiding most people, because... humbug."

Sparkle did not holiday well.

"I would have been humbugging with you if I were here," Alana shared. "I mean,they kill a tree and drag it into their houses to stick things all over because a baby was born a long time ago. I don't get it."

That moment of cultural judgment aside, she gave Sparkle a thoughtful look. "Don't think I'd hate Coruscant, though. How was it?"

"Yeah, Christmas is overrated. But Coruscant was pretty cool. The whole planet is a city, you know? And way cleaner than some of the places Atton's taken me to before. The Jedi temple is, like, hilariously over-glorified, and it's probably the first place I've ever been in my life where my writing is considered the posh stuff that the people with the fancy educations get over and above the common alphabet. Which... also meant I couldn't read a freaking greasy spoon diner menu written in Aurebesh, but whatever. The food's still good."

"It's so weird that the alphabet is common across so many cultures," Alana shared. "Lucky for me, and it means I'd be screwed in a greasy spoon on Coruscant too, but weird."

She dug a thumbnail into the orange and started to peel it. "See, I think Skywalker might have taken us there during that class about not dying last summer. I liked it but they all kinda blur together?"

"Super weird, considering the alphabet isn't even really common across most Earth cultures," Sparkle mused, and then shrugged. "But convenient, anyway. You'd probably remember Coruscant if you saw it, though. Maybe. I mean, I only saw the bit with the Jedi temple on it, but the temple itself went on for freaking forever. I think it was probably even bigger than the island, you know?"

That was not hyperbole. Which was weird, for Sparkle.

Alana had to think about it a minute. "Wait, that was the one with the apple slug stew," she finally remembered. "And I had to fix a speeder bike. Cool place, even though we didn't get to the Temple. It was like a insanely crowded version of a Landfall city."

"... If Atton ever tries to feed me anything with 'slug' in the name, I'm going to punch him," Sparkle decreed, wrinkling his nose. "But yeah, speeder bikes, big crowds. Sounds about right. Landfall's a bit like that, then, huh? I thought it kind of reminded me of Toronto, except for the whole... spaceships and droids and I don't think anyone gets, like, a backyard or anything like that... thing."

"It wasn't bad if you ignored the slug part," Alana confided. "And yeah, Landfall's like that. Cities, crowds, different species elbowing each other out of the way."

She sounded wistful.

"But we do have a little more green space, too, so I guess it's closer to Toronto. Except with spaceships."

"See, I'd be okay with Toronto with spaceships," Sparkle decided. "Hell, I wouldn't mind checking out Landfall someday. Sounds like an exciting place. Much as I'm still getting used to the different species thing, cities and crowds are what I live for."

"I should do that," Kaylin mused. "I usually just put stuff in my pockets, but a bag would be so much better."

"Way less likely to end with grape jelly oozing down your leg," Sparkle shared, picking up an apple and tossing it at her in a low underhand. "And I'm even getting more organized, lately. Plastic bags inside the bag."

Because it wouldn't do to have chocolate in the cold cuts. Or cat hair in either.

She tucked the apple into one of her pockets. "I mostly take things like bread and cheese and fruit," she admitted. "Not any of the real squishy oozy stuff."

She remained a little skeptical about a lot of the squishy oozy stuff anyway.

"Even fruit can be squishy and oozy," Sparkle pointed out. "Ever try to pocket a handful of blueberries before? It ends in tears. Tears, and purple pockets."

Which was kind of hilarious, too, granted.

"I don't believe I've ever tried blueberries, though yes, berries in general would be squishy. Unless they were in small hand-sized pies. Why don't they seem to make those here?" Some things were just a puzzlement to Kaylin.

Sparkle gave his shoulders a shrug.

"I dunno," he replied. "Maybe nobody ever suggested someone do it? It'd probably be pretty easy. Something bigger than a tart and smaller than a full pie, right?"

She nodded. "Back home the bakers sell them in the streets, right out of the oven. They fit in your hand and you can eat them right then, all hot and juicy, or save them till later."

Not that she usually had the money to buy them. At least not when they were hot.

"I mostly end up getting them near the end of the day when they're trying to sell the last of their stock. If I have any money that is."

Heh. Like lack of money would have stopped Sparkle.

"One thing I have to say about this place?" He picked up a brownie from the table and waved it around a little. "Money is overrated. Nice change of pace."

Before she became a Hawk - well, technically their mascot, blech - she wouldn't have been stopped by that either. But there weren't bakers like that in the fiefs.

Not any who were dumb enough to sell their wares out in the open without a lot of protection. Which didn't mean that she and - that she had't managed to still steal from them, just not some of the good stuff like that.

"It is nice to not have to worry about it," Kaylin admitted. "Most of the time back home I'm out of money halfway through the week."

Because she couldn't stop betting on things. She needed to find a place here where she could do that."

"I know how that goes," Sparkle replied, nodding a little and contemplating whether or not he wanted to stash away a whole platter of cheese. "Money never does go far enough. Why should it? The people who need it the most, nobody cares if they have enough. So, you have to make do."

Yeah, he was so taking that cheese.

"The things the wealthy waste money on," Kaylin said, also eyeing the platter, though she was only looking to take some of it. "They could feed all of Elantra for months with what they spend on foolishness in one day."

Especially down on Elani street with all the charlatans selling fortunes and love potions and all the rest.

"Toronto would be doing pretty okay too," Sparkle mused, popping a cube of cheese into his mouth for good measure. "But hey, there's the rich for you. Unless they had to work damn hard to get that way in the first place, they don't give a fucking fuck about the worth of the money they're spending. Just that it's theirs, and who cares about the little guy?"
