Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The forecast for today might have called for rain, but thankfully, there was no sign of bad precipitation in Fandom. The weather was bright and sunny, but still a bit chilly, so the first thing people might have noticed when they arrived was the bonfire set up in the middle of the lawn. There were tables and chairs scattered around the bonfire, some a safer distance away than others, and each table had been graced with a good portion of gold and blue glitter because the glitter supply was never, ever going to run out and certain people in the administration had just come to terms with that.

There were tables of moddable food and drinks, complete with the ingredients to make s'mores, as well as name tags and the lists of Big Siblings and roommates. It was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Other worlds? As weird as that sounded, she thought she understood what Raven meant, so she wasn't going to press the question.

"Seriously, there are superheroes? I mean, there's the physiological stuff, but then that's a whole other lifestyle." Amy scrunched up her nose. Superhero media had always struck her as beyond unrealistic. Why would anyone wear tights, the world's most uncomfortable garment, to fight crime? "More power to them, I guess."

Well, she certainly wouldn't get any argument from Raven about tights. "I know, it's really weird. But totally right up my brother's alley. He's always been the sort who wanted to save everybody."

Raven herself, for instance.

"So what's it like where you're from?" she asked. "Do you join in any of those protest rallies?"

"Noooo," Amy said at once. "Not at all. That's more my gi-- my best friend Karma's scene." She really had to stop talking about Karma like they were still 'dating.' "I'm more the watch-from-afar-in-solidarity type."

There were pictures of her on the internet holding a megaphone and wearing an 'Occupy Hester' t-shirt, but that was a whole other story.

"Overally it's a pretty uneventful area. We don't have any mutants, but we're home to the best amateur beauty pageant scene in Texas," she boasted sarcastically.

Raven probably wouldn't find those pictures. She wasn't that good at the internet, yet.

"Beauty pageants are fun," Raven said, mostly to be nice, but without any irony. "All those dresses."

"My stepsister's a big fan," Amy offered a little more mildly. "I wouldn't wear taffeta if you paid me, but everyone's got their thing, I guess."

Whatever that meant.

"Where are you from?"

"Westchester, New York," Raven said. And after a beat: "1955."

"Oh." It was a testament to the rest of the weirdness of the day that Amy's eyebrows were only going part of the way up, instead of actively grazing her hairline. "Wait, does that mean you have an ID that says you're in your seventies?"

Raven nodded. "I never thought of it that way. Nearly 80, even. Perhaps I should join the AARP."

"And look into getting Social Security checks," Amy agreed with a grin. "Couldn't hurt."

"Yeah, I guess so. The things that happen to your generation when you skip sixty years, am I right?" Amy joked.

"It could be worse," Raven said. "I'm still trying to figure out what happened to the space program."

"Okay, but here's the real question," Amy said, becoming aware that she had a great opportunity on her hands. "Do you think TV has improved or declined since your day?"
tigerundercover: (blonde - unimpressed)

[personal profile] tigerundercover 2015-01-04 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Are you kidding?" Raven asked. "There are girls on TV now. That do more than clean things! And sometimes they get to kiss each other!"
princessarcasm: (listen)

[personal profile] princessarcasm 2015-01-04 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
"Right?" Oh, Amy liked you, Raven. "My friend Karma always makes us watch old sitcoms from the fifties, but they're never going to live up to meta Orange is the New Black."

Of this Amy was certain.

"The sitcoms are more fun when you know that behind that shiny smile the mom just wants to brain everybody with a frying pan," Raven said. "But they still can't even come close to the stuff you can see today. And there's so much of it."
princessarcasm: (listen smile)

[personal profile] princessarcasm 2015-01-04 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Someone should re-dub some of those old shows with the moms' unspoken commentary," Amy said thoughtfully. "'Feminist Fifties Moms.' I'd watch that."

Hell, she'd make that. Give her an hour alone with iMovie.

"But yeah, I'm totally with you on the newer stuff. Not that all of it is perfect, but I'm all for media where women get to do stuff." Including the dirty interpretation of that phrase, but Amy wasn't sure how to go about breaching that topic, or whether that was something she was supposed to do.
tigerundercover: (blonde - pleased)

Re: Meet Your Roommate [Spring 2015]

[personal profile] tigerundercover 2015-01-04 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
And Raven wasn't really the sort to broach it, herself. She still had a lot of "girls don't talk about sex" conditioning to get over, after all.

"I would watch the hell out of Feminist Fifties Moms," Raven agreed. "And I'm really good at doing different voices."

The key was being able to actually change the shape of your entire voice box.
princessarcasm: (impatient)

Re: Meet Your Roommate [Spring 2015]

[personal profile] princessarcasm 2015-01-04 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Amy had already pretty much risen above the modern-day Texas variation on that conditioning, but she still needed to figure out a way to be out now that she knew for sure that she wasn't faking it.

2015 problems, right?

"Oh, yeah, I guess you would be," Amy said as the meaning of that statement actually connected. "And I'm good at downloading TV illegally, so..."

Hey, they could get YouTube famous! For the second time, in Amy's case.
tigerundercover: (blonde - pleased)

And for something much nicer than what Raven would eventually be famous for. Or maybe 'infamous' was a better term.

"Room 306 may have developed a project," Raven said. "Oh! We could ask Cecil about recording supplies. He's really into radio, so I bet he has some good microphones and things."
