Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The forecast for today might have called for rain, but thankfully, there was no sign of bad precipitation in Fandom. The weather was bright and sunny, but still a bit chilly, so the first thing people might have noticed when they arrived was the bonfire set up in the middle of the lawn. There were tables and chairs scattered around the bonfire, some a safer distance away than others, and each table had been graced with a good portion of gold and blue glitter because the glitter supply was never, ever going to run out and certain people in the administration had just come to terms with that.

There were tables of moddable food and drinks, complete with the ingredients to make s'mores, as well as name tags and the lists of Big Siblings and roommates. It was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"That makes no sense," Ezra replied, because he saw no reason to be coy about it.

That wasn't a flat-out refusal to believe her, though. He'd once gone on a collections job to someone's house only to have the house grow feet and run away. He could believe a lot of things.

"I think it has to do with quantum mechanics," Raven said. "Or magic. Or both."

Well, that latter option was comforting. Sort of.

"I see," he said, lightly. "Anything else I should absolutely be aware of?"

"Well, let's see," Raven said, ticking things off on her fingers. "There are these things called gremlins that have psychotropic bites, I'm a shapeshifter, there's free food in the common rooms, some people can read minds, Caritas is the bar on the island that doesn't card, and sometimes the island tries to kill you."

Ezra listened to her with his head tilted to the side. He looked open enough, and intrigued.

"What kind of shapeshifter?"

Of course that was the question he came out with.

"How many kinds are there?"
smilestopscars: ([neu] patiently waiting)

Ezra shrugged his shoulders. "Depends on where you draw the lines, I guess," he said. "What you consider to be important enough a difference to matter."

He was thinking of weres, personally.
tigerundercover: (blonde - curious)

"Huh." Raven was pretty excited to meet someone who knew stuff about shapeshifters. "I'm the only one I really know, so I never really thought about it that closely."

And Ezra was intrigued. She didn't smell like a were, at least, so he wasn't entirely sure what he was dealing with here. Other than a pretty girl he was enjoying talking to, of course.

"There's variety out there," he said. "Some places, anyway. Doesn't sound like there's much of it here, in that field."

"Not as far as I know," Raven said. "Unless other people have been turning into elephants and the news just didn't cover it."

Really, it was like someone was deliberately obfuscating this conversation.

"... You're an elephant?"

That was really poor phrasing. But he was still stuck in the wre mindset, and well, she'd named a specific animal.

"Well, no, right now I'm a girl," Raven said. "I took the shape of an elephant last month to help stop a ghost invasion. It's the biggest shape I've ever tried, so it kind of sticks in my head."

"Well, I can't turn into a rock." A beat. "I could look just like a rock. . . ."
smilestopscars: ([neu] you said something)

"Huh." The sniff was just an intake of breath. "Interesting."

And weird. But those often went hand in hand.

"So your world has shapeshifters that only turn into one thing?" Raven asked.

"Weres," he said, and while that was something that felt like it should have been obvious, he didn't sound like it. "One animal per person, no greedy exceptions."

"Oh!" Raven shook her head and smiled. "Right, of course. Sorry, I'm not used to thinking of were-animals as shapeshifters."

There was that arched brow again. Curiosity. "Really? It involves some fairly obvious shifting between forms."

But then that was the context he came from, and he wasn't used to anyone turning into much of anything else.

"Well, yeah, but. . . ." Raven trailed off with a shrug. She didn't want to say the 'it's kind of limited' bit out loud and maybe offend him. "I guess that always seemed more like a person who happened to have two forms?"
smilestopscars: ([pos] listening)

Ezra considered that – or possibly something else, who even knew? – for a second, then shrugged. "I suppose you're right." And he smiled again. "This has been highly informative."

Raven was just going to take that consideration as a good sign. "Well, good. That's what the program is for. And if you have anything else you need," she smiled back a little extra sly, "I'm in room 306."
