The forecast for today might have called for rain, but thankfully, there was no sign of bad precipitation in Fandom. The weather was bright and sunny, but still a bit chilly, so the first thing people might have noticed when they arrived was the bonfire set up in the middle of the lawn. There were tables and chairs scattered around the bonfire, some a safer distance away than others, and each table had been graced with a good portion of gold and blue glitter because the glitter supply was never, ever going to run out and certain people in the administration had just come to terms with that.

There were tables of ~~moddable~~ food and drinks, complete with the ingredients to make s'mores, as well as name tags and the lists of Big Siblings and roommates. It was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Alana looked less than convinced.

"Yeah, unless 'home' is on an interdimensional nexus and has people from different planets, realities and points on the timeline, this place still needs some explaining," she said. "Lot of us come here and then realize we're further from home than we expected."

"If it's going to make you happy," Ronan sighed, crossing his arms and not really bothering to listen to the words. "It's not like I can stop you, is it?"

He was really a bright, shining flower.

"If your presentation doesn't have a a PowerPoint, then I'll be less than impressed."

Because he was so impressed already.

"And I'm heartbroken not to impress you," Alana said, not bothering to hide her eyeroll. "Okay, so this is Fandom Island, state of Maryland, country of the United States, planet Earth, Sol system, Milky Way Galaxy. It is January third, 2015. You with me on all of that so far? 'Cause some people aren't."

"I got it," he said dryly. So far, Ronan was failing to see what Gansey wanted out of this place. He sensed nothing. He really wished he hadn't put Chainsaw in his room already too because he at least liked the bird. "And I'm guessing there's more?"

"Lead-up like that, there kind of has to be," Alana said cheerily. "Okay, so the thing I said earlier about the interdimensional nexus? That's ... pretty much the 'more.' Don't ask me about the science stuff, but the place draws people from every kind of world you can imagine. If you've read about it in a book or seen it in a movie, it's probably real here. I'm from another planet and I'm sort of boring for this place."

"Space alien?" Ronan was excellent at masking any sort of emotion that wasn't anger so surprise and actual interest would not be seen here even if he was feeling it. "Wow, television has told me wrong. You don't look little or green or male."

"My hair's kind of greenish in places?" Alana offered. "My eyes are green. But yep, space alien even though I'm not little or male. I'm from a place called Landfall, which nobody has heard of, don't worry. What's your story?"

"I'm from Henrietta. It's in Virginia. That's it." No, it wasn't but Ronan didn't really feel the need to tell random people his life story. Enough people knew that already. "Couldn't hack it at my last school so I get another chance here. I'm so lucky."

Alana figured some stuff was being skipped over, but she wasn't inclined to quiz people she had just met.

"Hey, you could have done a lot worse," she said. "Classes here are pretty easy, adults leave us alone, and most of the people are nice and everything."

If she was being truthful, that didn't sound all that bad. He still hated being so far from everything he knew. He even missed Kavinsky right about now.

"There anything interesting to do around here? Seems small."

"It is," Alana admitted. "But it has the basics: Arcade, bowling alley, movie theater. And there's a beach, which helps more when it's not the middle of winter."

God, this was Henrietta in island form. Ronan never got to make it to a big city. This place was even worse because there didn't even seem to be roads to drive on.

"Quaint," he drawled, shaking his head. "Can't wait to go perfect my bowling game."

Alana shrugged apologetically. "Sorry. I promise it's not as boring as it sounds. The island sort of makes its own ... excitement."

She couldn't in good conscience call it 'fun.'

"Yeah, we'll see." Maybe he could get out of here in a week or so. He figured Gansey was still trying to throw his weight around at Aglionby so maybe he'd succeed. He didn't know if he could stomach being stuck here. "Thanks for the primer."

"No problem," Alana said dryly. "And if you run into any issues settling in, let me know and I'll try to help."

"Won't be needed." He was very much in the camp of 'I can take care of my damn self' and didn't see himself climbing out of there anytime soon. "Seven out of ten for your presentation. Very informative."

"And I bet I lost a whole point for not using a slideshow," Alana said, wrinkling her nose. "Thanks. Good luck and all that."

Ronan didn't think he needed luck. Didn't think he'd get it anyway so he just left that alone.

"Yeah, sure."

He stood there quietly for a few seconds longer, letting the emotionless expression fall back on his face before he turned and went to find something to eat.
