Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The forecast for today might have called for rain, but thankfully, there was no sign of bad precipitation in Fandom. The weather was bright and sunny, but still a bit chilly, so the first thing people might have noticed when they arrived was the bonfire set up in the middle of the lawn. There were tables and chairs scattered around the bonfire, some a safer distance away than others, and each table had been graced with a good portion of gold and blue glitter because the glitter supply was never, ever going to run out and certain people in the administration had just come to terms with that.

There were tables of ~~moddable~~ food and drinks, complete with the ingredients to make s'mores, as well as name tags and the lists of Big Siblings and roommates. It was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Hannibal was here, and while he hadn't made quite the extravagant gesture for his new "teaching buddy" that he had for Karla, he had brought a number of finger foods that went very well with tea.

And a large thermos of very good tea; if Hatter hadn't brought his own, he shouldn't have to be subjected to the school's cheap teabags.

"So, some official looking paperwork tells me you are to be my teaching buddy," Hatter said, sidling up to Hannibal. "How could I ever get so lucky?"

"Healthy living and a virtuous lifestyle?" Hannibal suggested with a smile. "Welcome to this side of the wall." He offered him a container of tea sandwiches (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/roast-beef-and-horseradish-finger-sandwiches-recipe.html).

"You made refreshments?" Hatter asked, surprised but pleased. He plucked one of the sandwiches out of the container. "Don't trust the provided food?"

"I prefer my own," Hannibal answered with a shrug. "And I also brought tea." He pulled out the thermos. "Perhaps not quite your own, but I believe the school has put out teabags. Lipton."

"I barely know what those are and I'm already offended by their taste," he said, making a face. "Thank you for your kindness. It's already made teaching a good decision. We'll see how I Feel after the first week."

"Never show fear," Hannibal confided, "they can tell." He laughed. "Actually, I've found the students to be quite pleasant for the most part. What made you decide to teach?"

"Just something different to do with my time," Hatter said, shrugging. "Figured why not, right? If I'm going to be away from home, I figure I'll get some new experiences to go along with it."

Plus, the look on Alice's face when he told her would be terrific.

"New experiences are always good." Hannibal nodded. "And you're teaching business?" He'd read the roster in advance this time.

"Yes," Hatter answered. "Perhaps not a traditional business course but I've managed to run a tea shop back home and here without any issues so I figure I'm qualified enough."

"Certainly more qualified than some we've had." Pam. Cheryl. "I hope you enjoy it."

"I'm sure I will," Hatter replied. "What are you teaching this go time around? Something to do with cooking?"

"Baking," Hannibal confirmed. "I thought I might try something new."

"Have you found many decent cooks among the students?" he wondered curiously.

"Most of them are fairly decent," Hannibal allowed. "Only a few show real promise, but then I've also only known a few I wanted to keep a fire extinguisher nearby for."

"Have you made them cook for you as of yet?" Hatter wondered. "Giving them the world's most discerning judge?"

"That is generally their final," Hannibal answered. "What better way to tell if they've learned what I've taught them?"

"So, what happens if they make something really bad?" Hatter wondered. "Do you choke it down?"

"I stop eating it. And I hope they never take the class again," Hannibal confided. "Still, most of them can at least manage something palatable."

Which, granted, he had a wider definition of than most.

This man stood out from the crowd as well, though most beings Obi-Wan had seen here so far had something about one. But there was something off about this one-- his presence in the Force was a strange one. Unsettling.

There were precious few better reasons to be polite.

... and no, he would not be surprised to find out he was the only Jedi on the island who felt that way.

"Good morning," he said. "I see not all 'teaching buddies'--" the word fit oddly in his mouth, "--consider bellowing a proper welcome."

Did you really need a reason to be polite?

Hannibal chuckled. "Yes, well, I try to be a bit more subtle than that. It also helps that I'm acquainted with mine already." He stuck out a hand. "Dr. Hannibal Lecter."

You'd be surprised how often Obi-Wan had run into situations where he had to articulate to someone else a reason to be polite, honestly.

(Usually Anakin.)

The school already knew his last name, and so while Obi-Wan still attempted to avoid giving his first-- "Professor Kenobi, apparently," he said, with a brief, self-deprecating smile. He took Dr. Lecter's hand and shook it. "Pleased to meet you, doctor. What do you teach?"

That Anakin needed to be reminded to be polite would surprise Hannibal not at all.

"Cooking, for the most part, although a few other things from time to time. Baking, this semester. You?"

"Ethics, so it seems," Obi-Wan said. "I'm afraid I barely know anything about cooking, let alone baking - I've heard it said that's more of an alchemical discipline."

"A bit of chemistry, certainly," Hannibal agreed. "Though I also prefer to think of it as an art form. It appeals to the creative as well as the scientific side. 'So it seems', you said. You didn't plan to be here, then?" Fandom.
