BWI Portalocity Lounge | Saturday Morning

One of the very few perks of having a meteorologist for a mother was that Amy could almost always avoid weather-related flight delays by relying on her mom for information. That was usually very convenient, but today it meant that due to anticipated late morning storms in northern Texas, Amy had been forced to fly in at ass o'clock in the morning so that she wouldn't run the risk of missing the bus to school. So it looked like she was the first person to reach the Fandom High banner in the airport lounge, and while Amy had always had hopes of one day winning a race, this wasn't quite what she had had in mind.

Armed with an overstuffed duffel bag and her favorite pair of sweatpants (they were decorated with little cartoon strips of bacon!), Amy stifled a heavy yawn and parked herself in a distant corner of the lounge where she could wait for more people to show up.

Ugh. Carmilla couldn't believe she was hiding out at a high school of all places. But she had to admit, it was probably the last place Mother would look for her.

She dropped her duffel bag on the ground by the shuttle stop and leaned back against the wall, checking out the other students. Some of them were cute, at least.

Finally, someone who looked like a regular high schooler (if somewhat more attractive than the norm) and not some kind of knight or noblewoman. Amy gave her a nod. "Fandom High, right?"

Maybe it was a dumb question with the glittery banner and everything, but seriously, there were people in armor here.

"Yeah," Carmilla said lazily. "But I'm starting to feel under-dressed. This is a high school, right? Not a ren faire?"

She pulled out her phone to snap a quick picture of Anna for Instagram. #wtf

Amy grinned. "I'm hoping the school just has a really solid theater department," she offered, shooting another look at Cassandra and her big sword.

Although Hester High's theater department was famous, too, and no one had ever showed up in full costume on the first day.

"Although that teacher told me sweatpants are generally discouraged," she added with a nod at Jones. "This might just be the dress code. Renaissance casual."

The good news was that Amy already owned a corset! Thanks for that, Karma.

"As long as leather is acceptable, I'll be fine," Carmilla said with a smirk. She had plenty of corsets as well. She still had a fondness for them, even years after they'd gone out of fashion for the most part.

"I'm Carmilla," she offered up. "What's your name, cupcake?"

Amy had never been called cupcake before. Or really any type of pastry. She tried not to blush, which pretty much only magnified the blush.

"I'm Amy," she replied. "Nice to meet you. Um, I wonder if I can convince the principal that flannel shirts are part of my religion."

"Bet you'd look good in a corset, though," Carmilla had to point out.

What, she had eyes!

And she was back to blushing. Amy wasn't sure what to do with that remark other than blush and look away, but she made a split-second decision to pretend to be confident. New year, new her, right?

"Oh, thanks, my ex-girlfriend said that too," she replied, affecting a casual air that was one hundred percent forced. The statement was partially a lie, but it was for a good cause! "Only I didn't pack any from home, so maybe I could... borrow one of yours?"

Lengthy eye contact. Just like Shane had taught her. Baby-gay was growing up!

And Carmilla just loved baby-gays.

"Ex-girlfriend, huh?" she said. "That mean no one's going to have a fit of jealousy if I ask you to model it then?"

Baby-gays were great, it was true. And Amy was among the babiest.

Chin up, she said with all the confidence she could muster, "Not unless I have a secret admirer I'm not aware of."

"Would, um, would someone get jealous on your behalf?" Okay, the confidence kind of petered out at the end there.

"Are you waiting for the shuttle?" Anna chirped, excitedly, at the new person in their midst. "They said it's going to be some kind of a bus. And not one of those purple glowing things again."

Still not over traveling by portal, then.

(FLEEING FOR WORK, BACK LATER, BUT I HAD TO)

Ooookay, little miss sunshine. Carmilla was a little taken aback by Anna's cheerfulness.

"Purple glowing thing?" she had to ask. She hoped it didn't have tentacles. Tentacles were bad.

Anna had not yet begun to cheerful, Carmilla. You were dealing with a literal Disney princess, here. Have fun!

"It was big, and I stepped through it, and boom, this place," Anna said. "I think maybe it was some kind of a shortcut? Like. I don't recognize any of these places people are talking about, so I must have gone pretty far."

"I have no idea what you're talking about," Carmilla said. "But now I'm kind of sad I didn't get my own purple glowing shortcut. I'm going to file a complaint when we get to the school."
