BWI Portalocity Lounge | Saturday Morning

One of the very few perks of having a meteorologist for a mother was that Amy could almost always avoid weather-related flight delays by relying on her mom for information. That was usually very convenient, but today it meant that due to anticipated late morning storms in northern Texas, Amy had been forced to fly in at ass o'clock in the morning so that she wouldn't run the risk of missing the bus to school. So it looked like she was the first person to reach the Fandom High banner in the airport lounge, and while Amy had always had hopes of one day winning a race, this wasn't quite what she had had in mind.

Armed with an overstuffed duffel bag and her favorite pair of sweatpants (they were decorated with little cartoon strips of bacon!), Amy stifled a heavy yawn and parked herself in a distant corner of the lounge where she could wait for more people to show up.

On this side, there was no flash of light, no glowing door-- just a teenage girl in full (helmless) armor, sword in hand, stumbling suddenly into the room out of nowhere.

"Maker!"

Cassandra righted herself. Her eyes were wild. "Where is the mage?!" she snarled. "Are you another apostate?"

... Please excuse her, it'd been an odd couple of minutes.

Cassandra let out an irritated noise, but at least she lowered her weapon. She was only just beginning to recover her balance, so that was probably a good choice for herself, as well. "A student of what?"

None of this made the faintest amount of sense to Cassandra. Had she been bewitched? She was certain the apostate she had met in the Wilds had been disoriented-- perhaps disabled-- or... she had to be.

So she decided on a less confusing path. "Where is this school?" she asked. "Ferelden? Orlais? Nevarra? Tevinter?"

Had she been sent to the Imperium? That would explain a great deal.

"The United States?" What? Cassandra eyed the girl warily. "You mean the Free Marches, surely? How could I have been sent this far--?"

She had never heard of such magic before.

Hanna blinked. Then leaned forward to look behind the other girl, to see how she did that.

Not seeing anything was puzzling, but not terribly worrying. The sword, on the other hand....

"Where did you come from?" she asked, keeping her hands free to reach for her own concealed weapons.

Cassandra narrowed her eyes at the girl, and her hand traveled down to settle on her now-sheathed sword. "A mage's spell sent me here," she said. "Where did you come from?"

Her tone implied there had better be an answer forthcoming.

"The bus station," Hanna said accommodatingly. "After the train station." She eyed Cassandra's hand on her sword, and gave her a thoughtful look, ready to move. "Magic isn't supposed to be real." With the air of a seven-year-old divulging the Truth About Santa.

"What are you talking about?" Cassandra asked irritably. "Of course magic is real."

Hanna didn't judge much, not having enough experience with people to do that. Mostly she got curious. "I was told it was only in fairy tales. Like Grimm's. Myths and legends. And I've never seen any." She frowned. "Unless that was what you did when you appeared."

"I am not a mage," Cassandra said. Pointedly. Had this child been kept sheltered all her life? "I disrupted a spell that an apostate was casting. It sent me here. And I can assure you that magic is real. I have faced such mages in battle."

Pretty much, yes. From everything. Last week, electricity was new and overwhelming.

"Apostate; a person who renounces a religious or political belief or principle," Hanna quoted aloud, remembering it from her studies with her father. "You are a soldier?"

Anna was staring. She hadn't known what to expect, exactly, but a girl in fully-clad armor wasn't it.

"Are you a knight?" she asked. It seemed like a reasonable question.

It was probably the most reasonable question Cassandra had been asked since she stumbled on in here.

"Yes," she said. Well, in a manner of speaking. "Or so I will be."

She looked right on back at Anna, studying her. No staff, no other signs that she was any more a mage than the other girls had been. "Who are you?"

She had cooled some, but not yet to the point of sounding friendly to anyone. (That might take weeks.)

Anna could deal with brusque. She lived with Elsa, who rarely opened a door. Actually talking counted as downright cozy, in her book.

"Anna, of Arendelle," she said, offering the girl a proper curtsy. "I've been so bad about introducing myself today. Are you here for the school?"

Re: Wait for the Shuttle

Cassandra was not entirely certain whether to be pleased to receive something of a proper welcome, or to be her usual flavor of mildly irritated with unnecessary courtly flourishes.

On a day like today, she was willing to settle for the former.

"I am Cassandra Pentaghast," she replied. She didn't curtsy, not in the least because the armor made it difficult. "I am here by accident. I am attempting to find out how this occurred."

[identity profile] elated-or-gassy.livejournal.com 2015-01-03 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's horrible," Anna said, clasping her hands over her heart. "Were you hurt? In the accident? Was there a big purple thing? Because I got here through a weird purple thing and so now I'm sort of ... worried about that. Because that's not normal. At least, for me."

Re: Wait for the Shuttle

[personal profile] seeks_truth 2015-01-03 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Cassandra raised an eyebrow.

"It was white," she said. "Not purple. But the color matters little. Perhaps it is the same magic that sent us here."

Which made this girl an ally.

[identity profile] elated-or-gassy.livejournal.com 2015-01-03 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"It might be," Anna said. "I don't -- know anything about magic. At all. Except that I think trolls live near the --" do not say castle, Anna "-- the, city? I'm from? But I don't know if trolls are magical. They might just be trolls. Shouldn't make assumptions, right?"

And her sister was the Ice Queen, but, you know. The trolls had zapped that memory right out of her head.

"Do you think we're stuck?"

Re: Wait for the Shuttle

"No," Cassandra said firmly. "Something brought us here. It should have the power to return us. We must find what it is and force it to do so."

She was not sparing a single thought on as much as the notion that she might be stuck. If she had to break a few walls or people to make it right, she would, but she would not remain here.
