Sex, Dating and Self-Confidence [Tuesday, Period 2]

Irene didn't have the box on her lap today, as she was somehow without questions! Not even smart-assy ones!

What she did have, though, was a completely moddable collection of art supplies -- construction paper, magazines, scissors, pipe cleaners, the whole works. (In fact, Irene had kind of gone to the art store and vaguely pointed at things until she thought she had enough. The magazines had been pilfered wherever she could find them, but at least none of them were porny!)

"Good morning, darlings," she greeted them with a warm smile. "Today, we're beginning the self-confidence portion of our class. I've been looking forward to this for some time, and I'm glad I held it for the end, because I feel like I know you all at least a little better than I did at the start of the semester, and that's going to make today's class exercise much easier."

"We're going to make vision boards today," she explained, gesturing to the art supplies, and then pulled a little bit of a face. "I know it's cheesy and -- well. A bit...Oprah-y. But it's a marvelous exercise in determining what you want. Part of being confident is having clear, defined goals, and we'll talk a bit about that in a week or two. But for today, I want you to make a vision board, which is an abstract art project that is filled with things you want for your future, or that you feel represent you as you are now." She reached behind her on the desk, plucking up a collage on pale blue paper, featuring photos cut out of magazines -- a beautiful pair of shoes, a picture of Big Ben, two women kissing, elegant block letters spelling out 'IRENE,' amongst other things -- and some decoration.

"Try," she suggested, setting the board on her lap, "to think of things you already love about yourself. Things you already know you're good at. Because again, I've gotten to know you all decently well over the last two months, and you all are good at things. No one here has any reason to think they don't have anything to put on a board. Start there. And then build out -- what do you want for your future before you graduate? What about after? See if you can find photos -- or you may draw, if you're so inclined -- that represent these things. The idea is that you can hang a vision board somewhere and it will remind you of those goals and keep you focused -- or, if you tend to buy into bullshit, you can hang it and all your dreams will just come true through the power of positive thinking."

She rolled her eyes. "It's more the first thing I said," she confided. "Anyway. Have fun, kiddos. Ask if you need help." She didn't think they would, much -- her confidence in her class was well-illustrated by the fact that she'd provided adult scissors, after all.

After a little (a lot) of thought, Raven finally reached for one of the magazines and started putting together a face made from as many different parts as she possibly could -- not just lips from a different picture than the nose, but lips made from four different sets of lips. She used as wide a variety of skin tones as she could find, from as many different gender presentations, and even included a few animal parts here and there to put it together.

Once she was finally down to having to, say, add extra ears to keep going on the face part, she started in on the background in the same style, building a horizon line and a sky out of interiors and exteriors, urban and rural landscapes. The only parts of the board that weren't constructed of a variety of pieces were a few human-shaped figures in the background, including a set of protesters variously holding up signs and facing off against police, some in masks, some not, all of them in active poses, yelling or throwing things.

She sat back in her chair to let the glue start to dry on that and tilted her head, trying to decide if she wanted to add words, too.

Ichabod had no idea where to start, and didn't really see the point of the assignment. Added to that, he got distracted and started playing with examining a long strip of tape.

Eventually he looked over Raven's shoulder to see what she was doing, as she clearly had some idea on how to go about doing this.

Honestly, she was mostly making it up as she went along. She liked how it was turning out, though. She looked up when she sensed someone looking and smiled.

"First tape experience?"

"It sticks to everything," he complained, shaking his hand to get rid of it, which unfortunately made it stick to his hair.

He might need rescuing, Raven.

She's not laughing at you, Ichabod. She's laughing next to you.

"That's kind of the point," she said. "Though if you get enough dust and hair on it, it'll stop sticking to anything else." She tilted her head. "Do you need some help there?"

Of course, Raven would never laugh at him, would she?

"Please, can you get it out of my hair?" Ichabod said, giving up trying.

Certainly not in a mean-spirited way.

"Of course," she said. "Let me know if I actually pull something too hard." She scooted over where she could reach and got to work. "You're lucky; this isn't even the stickiest tape you can get."

"There are worse ones?" But Ichabod smiled now. "Thank you for your assistance. Will yoy show me what you are working on?"

"Oh yeah. We got very good at accidentally taping and gluing ourselves to things in the 20th century." She looked down at her vision board and shrugged. "Sure." She held it out for him to look at. "I was just sort of messing around."

That was one way to understate it.

Cecil's was...colorful!

And possibly instructive.

And not at all a surprise to anybody who had ever met him.

He'd have included kissing and having adult parts, but...well. Lack of porny magazines, and his drawing wasn't the best.

Irene was surprisingly correct. Kathy had a much easier time making her vision board than she ever would have dreamed, even just a year ago.

First, she made a border of cut out gymnasts, interspersing it with track runners and the like. Her speed and flexibility was what made Banzai possible. One magazine had apparently been explaining the phenomenon of K-dramas, which meant she had plenty of examples of historical Korean images to choose from. And even a few pictures of cuisine, because sometimes K-dramas existed solely to be food porn.

Then pictures of books, political demonstrations, technology. She rather thought those were obvious.

This Kaylin could do! Her board was composed largely of weapons, armed guards/police of various types, and a few with people saving others or delivering babies.

What? She knew exactly what she wanted to be.

Johnny's vision board was pretty simple. It ALSO had a picture of two girls kissing, as well as a flame and a mirror. Like, an actual small mirror.

Johnny's self-confidence should never be questioned.

Joker, of course, knew exactly what he wanted to be. There weren't any spaceships (well, not realistic ones) in the magazines, but he cut out a lot of pictures of military airplanes and pilots.

And he saw a picture of a woman who kind of looked like Eleanor, so he added her to the collage, and some pictures of couples kissing, and holding hands, and walking through a park together...

So maybe the two goals didn't really work together very well. He'd figure out a way to fix that.
