How To Get By In A Hostile World, Wednesday

Wonder upon wonders, Atton was here on time today, supporting ten days' worth of stubble and a black Jedi tunic. He'd told everyone to come to the Danger Shop - which was outfitted like a giant grocery store. Through the doors to his left was a kitchen.

He was sitting on the checkout counter. Of course he was.

"On our second week, I already had some of you guys trying to deal with the five credits-- bucks situation," he said. "This week, you get ten. Congratulations. Except your next paycheck doesn't come in for another six days, and you do need to eat. So." He spread his arms. "Go shopping! Then go next door and figure out how to use your ten dollars worth of shopping to cook something edible that leaves enough leftovers to help you survive for another day. Maybe two. Have fun."

That might've been the driest 'have fun' ever uttered between these walls.

It's mercifully short, at least.

It's an ordinary grocery store, tending a little towards the discount type. Remember, you've got ten bucks, so make it stretch.

Not that Atton is going to give anyone any guff if they decide to pool resources or talk someone else into giving them part of their money. It's part of the exercise! Just not one he'll share with you. You do the thinking.

Karina... Karina was, let's be honest, probably going to fail this exercise miserably. Being thrifty was not something she was very good at and this went beyond thrifty straight into penny-pinching which was a skill she'd never, ever needed.

Karina wandered the aisles, feeling rather entirely at a loss and not liking that.

She'd never really noticed before how expensive groceries were. Huh.

Mara was looking carefully for the sort of food that wouldn't scream "broke and vulnerable"--that sort of thing was not the attention you wanted to draw to yourself when you looked like Mara did--and ended up with a box of pasta and some sauce. With the rest of the money, she bought rice and a few cans of beans.

Since she was a negligible cook, this would have to do, and it completely screamed "hi, I'm broke."

So Face hadn't really been shopping that much before, and definitely not in this place. He wandered through the aisles, trying to figure out what was considered good value here.

Easy. So freaking easy. Sparkle could live on pretty much anything. He was going to skip the instant ramen - no point going that cheap - but a box of Kraft Dinner would last him two meals, especially if he padded it with some frozen mixed vegetables, and milk and butter were actually kind of optional if you didn't mind the cheese being roughly the consistency of glue.

So, two bucks for the mixed frozen veggies, and then a buck for each box of macaroni... He could get five of those and still have change left over for later in case he wanted to get fancy with a small bottle of ketchup. Sweet.

Kaylin... well, a Kaylin and her money are soon parted. And this money just didn't seem real anyway.

Which might explain why she made a bet with the grocery store clerk - don't even ask - and ended up without a penny to her name. Well, it wouldn't be the first time she went hungry till her next paycheck.

Whoops?

Using your groceries, make at least one meal that will last you two days and still leaves you enough food for the remaining four. Good luck.

The grocery clerk felt bad for her and tossed her an apple as she left, so Kaylin was sitting on one of the counters watching the others cook and eating her apple.

Hell, he might have some tips.

Oh yeah, Sparkle had this whole thing down.

If anyone wanted to know how to survive on Kraft Dinner and a bag of frozen veggies, he was so your guy.

He's poking around the alcohol section of his simulated store. Mostly for effect, mind you.

I think I've earwormed myself with Miracle of Sound tunes into the next millennium.
