US Government (Friday, February 24, 4th period)

"For those of you who were not in Professor Lyman's US History class, you will not know me. My name is Mr Feeny. You may call me Mr Feeny. Professor Lyman has been called away on urgent business that is none of your concern unless someone lets him near a microphone again.

It's my understanding from Professor Lyman's notes that you were learning about the President of these United States and the forces that support him to make every day decisions in the government. Today will be a discussion-based class and the proposed hypothetical question is this - if you were President for a single day and you could enact one change in the current administration's policies, what would you choose to change and why would you change it?

'Blowing something up' is not a suitable answer, Mr Elric."

John thinks about this one for awhile before answering.

"The way our budget is being spent, definitely," John says. "As I understand now, most of it goes to the military. Not that the military shouldn't get a good chunk of the budget but other, domestic issues need to be more closely looked at. Healthcare, education, inflation, unemployment. These issues are directly affecting the inhabitants of the US and there's really nothing to show for improvement in these areas by the government."

"I don't think funding should be completely stripped from the military," John says. "But, the division of the money should be more closely looked at. If there's a billion dollars going towards something unnecessary like 'money stored away in case space aliens land' then that money should be put towards more useful things such as seriously under funded domestic issues."

Duo scratches his head as he thinks. "Well, I dunno too much about this current dude in office, but I think if I were President for a day, I'd do somethin' along the lines of withdrawin' all military troops. It ain't right using military force to create peace."

"Money?" Duo looks geuinely confused, being from a far distant future and all. "Since when have Earth-based Americans ever had money troubles?" He shrugs. "As for the part about savin' people's lives, that's what peace does. And just in case you got some lingerin' problems that involve ensurin' safety of human lives, well. That's where those of us who don't mind dyin' come in. Clean-up crew, if you like." He adds with a bitter grin. "Though I guess maybe if they don't have Mobile Suits, my way is a bit riskier."

Sam, possibly a little bitter on this subject after recent events, replied, "The government's current domestic policy of spying on people it suspects of being a danger to the country without approval or permission for a wire tap from any court. It's a blatant invasion of privacy and our rights as citizens."

She glared at Marty the whole time.

Marty ignored Sam. Well not really.

"I'd take a look at unnecessary government spending. Like on Deep Space Radar projects."

"I think they should still do it, if a court decided there was enough reason to do so." Sam considered other options. "I also believe that a more cohesive intelligence network could solve some of those problems."

"Going on something that hasn't been mentioned, 'prolly the education system. Take highschools for instance, since we could relate to that more-- There's been debate here and there about choosing the school you go to rather than going to a designated school depending on the area you live in. It'd create a sort of competition amongst them, and have them strive to get better teaching requirements and courses. I'd allow that, for one; I think it would make a lot of people happier and strive more for acedemic success. Also, I'd get rid of that manditory passing of a standardized test in order to graduate. One could be making great grades, but because they aren't able to pass a test that normally isn't covered in their regular classes they're unable to move on. It's a little unfair for those who struggle with that sort of thing, in my opinion." Alphonse crossed his arms and nodded. "That's just a little portion of what I think. And no explosions happened in the process."

"I'd change their policy of twisting science to suit their needs and appease their base. Scientists shouldn't be muzzled to keep them from talking about the very real effects of global warming. There's no reason for NASA to be worrying about discussing creationism when talking about the Big Bang. And there's certainly no reason for the FDA to not approve a drug for over the counter use when every scientist on the panel said it was perfectly acceptable."

Mrs. Krabappel and Principal Skinner were in the closet making babies and I saw one of the babies and then the baby looked at me.

Whoo hoo! I'm having MAJOR Boy Meets World flashbacks as it is. Krabappel would've made me quote so much Simpsons stuff.
