"All right," Atton said. He'd hopped up on his desk again, because who needed chairs anyway? "Today, introductions are over. Congratulations. None of you annoyed me so much that I wanted to boot you out of my class."

Though some of them came close. Evie.

"Now I'd like to think it doesn't come as a surprise to anyone that if you don't have the muscle - financial, physical, powers-wise, whatever - to push your way into a place of safety in life, well, your brain's going to have to do. The easiest way to use it is to look at the way other people see you and use that-- usually impressions are going to be your first line of defense."

He gestured at himself.

"Having taken a class from me twice and maybe heard about me on the radio, what's the impression I give you? What do you think I'm capable of? What do you think I'm not? What do you think my story is?"

He waited until everyone had taken their turn.

"Okay," he said, "So, that's what you think I am. Now pick another student. Tell them what your impression of them is, and vice-versa. Then talk about what that impression could do for you. Are there places you think you can enter more freely because you give off this vibe? Are there places that are harder to get into? People that are easier or harder to convince? Think about it."

What impression does your teacher give off?

Mara's true impressions were kept carefully to herself, but she could allow some generalities. "You're from a galaxy with space flight and issues with authority overstepping their boundaries," she said. "You're not interested in people trying to sugar-coat anything, and crying or other strong emotions will probably make you uncomfortable."

And he was strong in the Force, but she probably wasn't supposed to know that.

"Yeah, so try not to do that," Atton said lightly. "So, what good would that impression do me?"

Mara frowned in thought. "It makes people leave you alone."

"You have a ship and you're sad outside of class." This is why Atton shouldn't brood on days his students had radio. "Which means something must have happened to make you sad, because you have a ship on a planet where they still use wheels."

Face knew it was a flip answer, but if people got the impression the only thing smart about him was his mouth, that was the point of the class, right?

"Glib snobbery," Atton said. "Nice."

"Just saying, you've got the means to go anywhere in the galaxy, and you pick a place that makes your average Outer Rim rockball look like Coruscant." Though the fact the average Rim world wasn't much like Coruscant was often a mark in its favour. "What reason would a guy have to do that, if it's not lording it over the natives?"

Face could think of a few.

Sure, Joker felt the same way about wheels, but they way Face said it made him indignant on Vintage Earth's behalf. "Hey, hovering is super energy-intensive," he pointed out. "Wheels are more efficient. They still use fire here, too, from time to time -- are you going to complain about that, also?"

"You're a 'tough guy' type," Joker announced thoughtfully. "You're teaching this class, which means you know how to handle yourself in all kinds of situations. Probably grew up on the streets, maybe ran with a gang? You're from the same galaxy as Skywalker, which apparently means there's a good chance you're related to him. You were arrested a few months ago, but you're back, and you said you have superpowers now."

He came to a conclusion, and the corner of his lip quirked up in a smirk. "Sooooo... You're an antihero. I mean, seriously, you're like a walking cliché. I'll bet you run around saving peoples' lives and pretending you hate it. Do you have some sort of cave, where you can be all dark and brooding and invent crimefighting gadgets?"

"Oh, now you found me out," Atton said dryly. "You think that vibe does me any good?"

He put a lot of work into coming off like a walking cliche, so at least it was good to know that was still working?

Find a partner and discuss your impressions of them. Go back and forth, then talk about how those impressions could help or hinder you.

Yeah, Sparks was game. And looking around for a partner with a faint smirk on his face.

This was gonna be fun.

Face looked around the room with an expression he knew came across as friendly and open, but not particularly bright.

"Face, Face, Face," Joker greeted him. "You are smug, and a little pretentious, but you seem like a friendly sort of guy. To keep up that kind of chipper attitude despite the whole" -- he gestured at his own face, mirroring the area of Face's scar -- "nickname thing, that's pretty impressive. Probably got a lot of bitter seething underneath, am I right? And you're also one of Skywalker's great-grand-nephews-in-law, or whatever."

Awww, yeah. Sparkle was just kind of grinning to himself, through this class. Most people got exactly the first impression of him that he wanted them to, after all.
