Amongst what he assumed to be his possessions, Garik (or at least he was fairly certain that was his name, for some reason it had taken him a while to decipher his ID card) had found a letter informing him to come to the library today. Not that he was entirely sure what a library was, or why he felt oddly vindicated that it was full of books.

He was, however, convinced there was something odd about the fact certain books kept flying off the shelves and towards his head whenever he put his feet up on the desk.

"We could be." Honestly, he didn't really know. "We've got the scar thing in common."

He tapped the one on his neck. "Maybe it's like a support group kind of thing?"

Garik swore, in what was definitely a different language, when he saw the scar on Travis's neck.

"Think we got them at the same time?"

For a second, Travis just stared at Garik when words that he definitely didn't recognize came out of his mouth. He didn't think he knew what those meant or that he could speak that language.

"That would make sense," Travis said because both scars were large and impressive looking. "Maybe an accident? Or do you think it was intentionally done?"

They were also completely different kinds of scars, but it wasn't like either of them knew that right now.

"How do you accidentally nearly cut someone's head off?" Garik asked. So that was a vote for intentional.

"...very carefully?" Travis suggested though he didn't sound serious. He rubbed a hand over the scar. "I'm surprised you didn't lose an eye with where yours is. Maybe we..."

He really had nothing. "Pissed off the wrong person? I bet I could do that."

There was something that felt right about that to Garik. "Well I doubt anyone had our health in mind," he said. "But what kind of person would try to do this to a couple of kids?"

"What if they try again?"

"That's...something I hadn't thought about," he said though he was damn sure thinking about it now. "Think they did the thing with the memories too? Wiped them so we'd be caught off guard and defenseless?"

"...that makes sense." More than the actual reason would. "Which means it could be anyone."

"Did you meet anyone suspicious yesterday?"

"I don't think so," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "I met someone but he seemed more interested in chocolate cake and tattoos then trying to kill me or maim me further."

But maybe it had been a front? "His name was Tobias. He was...I thought he was nice. I don't know now though. What about you?"

"No." Possibly the screaming had scared them off. "Maybe he was just trying to lull you into a false sense of security?"

"Maybe." He could definitely see that being the case. "But, he didn't do anything else to me and I don't know where he is now. He said he couldn't remember anything either."

"Maybe his plan backfired?" Garik said, inspired. "He tried to wipe our memories and got his own too."

"That would be sweet revenge," Travis said, eyes widening for a moment. "But, maybe he was the only one who knew how to get the memories back? And now he won't be able to give them back to us."

"If only we knew more about how he took our memories," Garik said. "But how would we find out?"

Oh, if only there was a giant room filled with knowledge somewhere on this island.

"I have no idea."

Yeah, the library you were standing in couldn't help you at all! Nope, not the library and all its knowledge!

"Ask random people?"

"That seems like the best plan," Garik agreed. "Surely one them knows something."

The library, all its knowledge, and its connections to other libraries and places of knowledge could not help them at all.

"Someone has to know something," Travis agreed, nodding. "There's no way two people are maimed and memory wiped without someone having seen something or knowing something. There's no such thing as a perfect crime."

Garik nodded his agreement. "We need to investigate." Someone was going to feel such an idiot tomorrow morning. "Discover the truth."

A few people were gonna feel like idiots tomorrow.

"At least we're in this together and not alone, right?" That was good, right? "No one can sneak up on us now."

"You and me, we've god each others backs," he said. "We'll get to the bottom of this."

Which would be impressive, considering there was no bottom to get to.

Travis's smile was one of relief.

"Glad I found you, man," he said, nodding. "Really glad."

Somehow, he wasn't sure exactly why, Garik knew that relieved smile was completely genuine.

"Me too."
