Faculty Meeting (Friday after classes)

With the semester in full swing, Zoe thought there might be a need for the teachers and administration to talk to each other. Or maybe it was just Friday and Fridays deserved to be celebrated. Either way, a handwavy message had gone out to the staff to meet in the student council room for an informal faculty meeting. Zoe had set up coffee, cold drinks, donuts, and pastries; there was nothing alcoholic yet, but it was still early in the semester.

"Good afternoon," she said once it looked like everyone was there. "I wanted to give everyone a chance to get together now that we're past the introduction phase with the students. Feel free to take some food and talk to each other about whatever you need to." Whether they talked about students or things that actually interested them was up to them.

Hannibal chuckled. "As a doctor - if not your doctor - I insist." He set them down for her. "You probably don't want to drink too much caffeine, but a bit in moderation should be fine. The alcohol in the sweets is sufficiently evaporated to not cause a problem. And there's no problem at all with sugar," he promised. "How are you doing?"

"Umm..." Karla blushed. Which, she would hasten to have Hannibal know that it was not a thing she normally did. Another stupid hormonal thing. "There are some definite behavioral changes," she said, meaning Warren is glad I'm here because it gives him a chance to rest up before I get back and tackle him again. "I also feel like I'm drooling all the time. It's gross. And when I'm not drooling, I'm nauseated. No actual throwing up yet, just the feeling I'm about to at any given time."

She paused and added, "And my tits hurt. It's like I'm fourteen again."

Hannibal kept his chuckling as quiet as possible in deference to the fact Karla might not want to announce that to the entire room. "If it's any consolation, you look lovely," which was as much as he was going to address the "tits", "and the excess saliva tends to lessen after the first trimester. Eating a lot of small meals can sometimes help," he added. "Do you think you have anybody who might be willing to cook like that for you?"

"I don't know," she said, giving him the biggest, bluest eyes she could muster. "Do I? It sure would be nice. And, you know, I'd hate to put it all on Ermengarde."

Who was, you know, paid to feed Karla. And had an entire army of undercooks to back her up.

"Ermengarde is a very busy lady," Hannibal agreed solemnly. "But I do hear that there's a man of your acquaintance who quite enjoys both cooking and spoiling his friends."

Just, you know, someone.

Maybe she knew him!

"Oooh, do you think so?" she asked. "I mean, I'd just be worried. He'd need to be very stringent and careful about what he made, packing in the most healthy benefits into a small package that was also something that would appeal to me. It seems like it could be a big challenge. Do you think he's the type who'd see that as fun, rather than a great deal of bother??"

"Well, he is a doctor, so he should have a very good idea of what healthy foods are best. And I understand he adores a challenge." Hannibal grinned. "It would be my pleasure. Just think - I shall have to try and outdo Ermengarde. And she, of course, will have to try and outdo me."

That would be a very fun competition.

Especially for Karla!

"Speaking of being a doctor--and not that I don't already have the best medical care in Kaeleer--I was wondering if I could impose on you a bit? I have magical Healers keeping an eye on everything, but there are certain bits of technology that I don't have access to. I know you're not practicing anymore, but..."

She had heard about sonograms and machines where you could listen to the baby's heart. Waaaaaaaaaaant.

"If we were to buy some of that tech, could you make recommendations? And would you know how to use it?"

Hannibal looked at her curiously. "Of course. What did you have in mind - ultrasound? MRI? Or did you mean intensive care units in case of emergency?"

"The sonograms and the Dopplers, I think," Karla said. "We don't have anything in Kaeleer that would allow us to see what's happening within until within is quite literally without. But hearing the heartbeat...seeing everything develop and grow..." She flushed again, looking down. "I just think it would be really neat."

"There's a reason such things are very popular," Hannibal noted, smiling. "I'm told it can be a rather magical - in the figurative sense - experience."

He hesitated for a moment. "We really must discuss medicine and Healing. I've no idea what your healers are capable of and what medicine might be of use."

"We keep missing one another," Karla sighed. "I'd offer to stay after the meeting, but it's late in Glacia. I've been just exhausted lately and I have Court in the morning to get up for."

"I plan on a housewarming party soon - in the next week or so," Hannibal said. "Perhaps you'd like to spend a few days?"
