Meditation and the Art of Kicking Ass [August 28, 2014, 2nd period]

Anakin had contacted his class and told them to dress comfortably for class, then given them directions to the Danger Shop. Anakin had programmed it to look like the gym (without hogging the gym in case any other students had a sudden need to hit things) and was waiting for the students to arrive, sitting on the mats in his Jedi tunic and pants. He'd left the robe in his office.

After gesturing for the students to join him on the mat he began. "I'm Anakin Skywalker," he said. "I'm the Dean of Students in addition to teaching the class on meditation and, well, ass-kicking. In my galaxy, the ability to clear your head is linked with hand-to-hand combat. When you are free of the noise in your head, you are able to concentrate more fully on your opponent. Now, I normally don't do introductions, but today I'll make an exception because I need to know both about your experience in meditation and in hand-to-hand combat, and that's not something I can judge immediately by how you sit on the mats here."

He smiled, a brief upturn of his lips. "Before I began teaching here, almost ten years ago now, I was a Jedi Knight in my home galaxy. I've been trained in meditation and hand-to-hand combat since I was ten, and I was considered one of the best warriors of our Order."

And then he'd become a Sith Lord, which was more on the "choking people" and less on the "physical exertion" but he wasn't mentioning that part. "And since coming to Fandom, I've fought any number of bizarre creatures, including dinosaurs, and so I can assure you that hand-to-hand combat, with and without weapons, will be useful here."

He pointed to the student to his left. "You go first. Name and any experience you have in either meditation techniques or hitting things really hard."

"Hi. I'm Johnny Storm and I have no experience in meditation OR hand-to-hand combat," Johnny said. "But I do have a power where I can set myself on fire, and I'm able to control that without setting everything else on fire, too, and I've won a bunch of fights by, you know, shooting fire."

"Please keep up the not-setting-us-on-fire trend," Anakin said a little wryly. "Meditation will help aid in your concentration, Nice to meet you, Johnny."

"I'm Barry. I know almost all hand to hand combat techniques on earth including the use of weapons such as kendo, aikido and fencing. I also have advanced technology weapons that I've ripped off from movies such as boasters and laser swords. I fucking suck at meditation. My brain is wired a little differently than most. "

Anakin's eyebrow twitched at the laser sword but he moved back to the part about the class instead of asking. "Did you learn the combat from movies too or from live instructors?"

"Good morning, my name is Daphne Blake." She did not bow to him though she wondered if her sensei back home would have encouraged her to do so. "I have done some beginning meditation techniques and I know Judo and some Karate."

"Marasiah Fel, and I've got a fair amount of practice in both those things," she said vaguely, since she figured Anakin had some idea of what she knew/could do.

"Scott McCall, I, uh..." he wasn't really sure how to explain the whole 'anchor' business, which he figured was kind of meditative, without mentioning the whole werewolf thing. "I don't really have any experience with meditation. But I used to have really bad asthma, so sometimes I did these breathing exercises? And I haven't had any sort of training when it comes to fighting." His fighting technique mostly consisted of 'jump at things and claw them' which was not very sophisticated at all.

"My name is Kira Yukimura, and I don't have a lot of experience with either meditation or beating on things," she said. "Actually, my mom's kind of meditative, so I've seen it, but not really done it myself."

"Hi, I'm Alana," Alana supplied. "I've never really meditated, but I've taken a bunch of combat classes at school so far. But no, um, field experience."

"Hi, I'm Kathy," she said, looking a lot more sure of herself then the last time she'd taken one of Professor Skywalker's classes. "I do a lot of yoga, but that's less for meditation and more to keep me flexible. And I don't know any specific fighting style? I mostly kinda improvise, with a lot of gymnastics thrown in for good measure. I'm fast, so I try to use that to my advantage."

Now that the touchy-feely poodoo's out of the way, Anakin led the class over to a series of punching bags. "We'll start with something inanimate before you start hitting real people."

He did a quick demonstration on how to wrap hands up for any beginners, then showed them how to throw a punch (the bag went further than any punch by a non-superpowered person had a right to, so...there's that) and stepped back to watch the class and to offer help where it was needed.

Johnny indulged in some fan service reference comedy that nobody here would get by saying, "It's clobbering time," before throwing his first punch. He continued to attack the bag like somebody who had watched plenty of MMA fights without actually studying them. He struck quickly and poorly.

Barry stepped to the body bag and went a five solid minutes of pummeling it with his fists and the occasional knee and kick.

Sia spent a good amount of time training normally, so she knew how to do this. She just considered punching in class practice.

Kira didn't realize there was a right way and a wrong way to throw a punch, so she paid close attention to Anakin, and when she was finally ready to hit the bag it went out quite a bit further than she expected. Maybe those fox bits were good for something after all!

Alana hit the punching bag pretty hard for an average-sized girl. She wasn't doing anything fancy, but her technique was clean, and if the punching bag had been a person it would have been in some pain.

Kathy didn't start by hitting the punching bag. She knew full well that she wasn't going to hit it hard enough to make it really swing, so she decided to give it a boost. Once it was swinging wildly on the chain, she dove in, dodging around the bag and going for quick strikes, always aiming to be somewhere the bag wasn't.

"Excuse me, Professor," Kathy said, proving I have one girl who can be polite. "But I guess I should make sure up front--are using powers encouraged in this class? Or prohibited? Mine isn't something I can easily turn off, but I can try?"
