Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Were you a veteran Fandom resident? Did you finish getting your brain broken by your sibling and/or buddy? Did you just want to sit down to recover from the shuttle ride? If so, then there were plenty of tables and chairs set up across the lawn just waiting to be filled!

[This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Jalian was curious about the new people, and all the food was good (even if her options were limited), so she was here at the picnic.

She was wearing knee-length jeans, her largest knife strapped visibly to one leg, and a close-fitting white tank top. She'd bought a pair of cheap sunglasses to try, but soon got annoyed at the mild distortion from the lenses and pushed them up onto her head. And she'd been spending a lot of time in the sun lately, so her skin nearly matched her hair for whiteness.

Her expression might be fairly friendly, but the rest of her was pretty glaring.

"Is that your knife or are you just happy to see me?" Johnny asked. Because yes, why not approach the most heavily armed person he'd seen so far with a nonsensical reversal of a dick joke?

Fortunately, Silver-Eyes didn't have that dick joke? So at least you weren't sounding trite, Johnny!

Jalian just blinked at him. "It is my knife, yes. Should I be happy to see you?"

"Well, I think so, but I'm biased," Johnny said. "Johnny Storm, new kid."

"Jalian d'Arsennette y ken Selvren," she answered. "I have been here for several months."

"Is that name French?" Johnny asked. "Because I just spent some time in France."

"It is...Silverspeech?" Jalian answered dubiously. "I don't know if that's French. It means Jalian of the Fires, of the clan of people with silver eyes."

"Ah. Let me guess, you're another person from another world," Johnny said, catching on.

"I'm from a different timeline," she corrected. "I was attempting to travel back along a neg-entropy timeline to an earlier point in my own, but I ended here. You are from another world?"

"Technically, I think," Johnny said. "I'm from pretty much this time and place, give or take."

"I could tell," Jalian said. Something about the very confident male and the contemporary clothes. She looked him over and shrugged. Then did a slight double-take, squinting. Stupid glasses, she was still readjusting from them. "You are hot," she noticed.

Welcome to a girl who could see infrared and wasn't entirely up on modern slang yet, Johnny!

"I'm glad someone noticed. I work out," Johnny said casually. "It helps me save the world pretty much all the time."

"You work out what?" Jalian asked, confused. Physics equations? That would explain the saving the world, maybe. "And why does that affect your body temperature?"

"Oh, hot body temperature," Johnny said. "Sorry, I thought you were flirting. Um, I have fire-based superpowers. They call me the Human Torch."

"Why would that be flirting?" Jalian asked, curious. "You don't look hot enough to set things on fire. You get hotter?"

"When someone says 'you're not,' that usually means 'you're attractive and I might want to make lip-to-lip contact if this conversation goes well or if you're famous and I like attention or if we're both drunk,'" Johnny explained. "As for your second question..."

Johnny's hand burst into flame as he held it up to show a peace sign.

Jalian had started to file away the uses of that slang, but got completely derailed by the hand on fire. She came closer, peering at it interestedly. This wasn't anything like Jono's, which put off no visible infrared - this was actual fire. "How doesn't that hurt?" She assumed, since he wasn't writhing on the ground in agony.

"Because I'm special," Johnny said. "And something scientific I don't care much about."

Jalian gave him an exasperated look. How like a male! "How can you not care about the science?" You'd been doing so well, too, Johnny!

"Because it's boring," Johnny answered. "I can sit around in a lab and read all the reports my sister and her ex-boyfriend put together, or I can fly around fighting monsters and dating models. I'm out the window at the word 'or.'"

"Science is important for changing things!" Jalian protested. "Don't you need science for dating models of things?" she asked. "And I would leave the monsters alone, unless they get in my way or try to hurt me."

"Dating...?" It took a moment for that to sink in before Johnny facepalmed. "I think we really are from two completely different worlds."

"That's a metaphor."

"It's true," Jalian pointed out. "My timeline is very different from here."

Face remained in palm. "Just out of curiosity, does figurative language or slang exist in your timeline? If not, just tell me now and I'll try to adjust."

Jalian rolled her eyes. "I know what a metaphor is! But it is also true. We have plenty of slang - do you know Silverspeech?"
