BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge- Saturday morning

A few days ago Gwen saw New York destroyed and drowned and her friend/roommate/surrogate brother type was presumed dead for a while- got a really amazing obituary for his alter-ego and everything. Today she was waiting for a portal that was going to take her to a school in Maryland. She was actually looking forward to school, just to get back to doing normal things again, but the timing was weird.

She seemed to be the first one here, and the banner meant she was probably in the right seat, so.

Gwen would be the sullen-looking girl sitting under the glittery Fandom High banner and showing too much midriff. And occasionally brushing at the top of her head with her hand because she was convinced the glitter was probably raining down on her.

"That's just one of the many things that makes me more fun to be around than most boys," Johnny said.

"Oh? And do I want to know what those other things are?" Evie asked, trying not to laugh. "Do you have them listed somewhere, like on a business card you can hand out? Are there references I can check?"

She held out her hand. "Evie Greene. Nice you meet you."

"That would be tacky. I leave it up to everyone I meet to come up with their own list. If they want, they can tweet it, hashtag 'johnnysgreat'," Johnny said, reaching out to shake. "I'm the Johnny in question. Johnny Storm."

She didn't seem like she knew that yet. This was getting weird.

Nope. Not a clue. Oh the woes of anonymity!

"I'll keep the hashtag in mind for later," she said. "We do have a whole shuttle ride for me to observe your awesome in action. Maybe we can get you to be a trending topic or something."

"Wouldn't be the first time, I doubt it'll be the last," Johnny said. "But I'm getting the impression you're from a place where I'm not already famous. So you wouldn't know that yet."

Maaaaan. And just when she thought he was kinda normal!

"You're famous," she said, trying to keep a straight face. "Like, you have a Youtube channel? Or....?"

Please don't let him be one of those awful guys where he was on the news for doing something horrible and now thought it made him 'famous.' There wasn't an orderly or even a TSA agent around if he got creepy.

"Well, I have that too," Johnny said. "I'm a superhero. The Human Torch. It's really weird that I'm not getting recognized more here. I probably could have tried to do a secret identity thing if I knew about that ahead of time."

"Oh. A superhero. Yeah, of course," Evie said, smiling and nodding like a champ. "The Human Torch, huh? You...glow? Or just light stuff on fire?"

Was there anyone else around? Help? Evie needed an adult!

"If security busts me, it's your fault. I'll take the heat for you, though, since, you know, hero," Johnny said. He looked around to make sure the coast was clear. Then he held up a flaming index finger, which he used to sign his name in midair. A fiery "Johnny Storm" was visible for a few seconds before it faded.

"Take the heat?" Evie scoffed. "Is that some kind of 'torch' pun?"

For a minute, after Johnny did his little trick, Evie was worried that she'd somehow caught his crazy, like his delusions had made friends with hers just long enough to show her what he wanted.

But that was crazy-talk. Like, literal crazy talk. She took her medicines religiously, she was cured. So she closed her eyes, counted to three, and thought about it. Obviously, it was some kind of trick. Smoke and mirrors kind of stuff. He probably did it to impress gullible girls and things.

Sure, she didn't know how he did it, but she and Mel had watched Criss Angel's show and hadn't known how he'd done any of his tricks either. Sleight of hand and misdirection. That was all.

"Cool," she said. "Gonna pull a rabbit out of your hat, next?"

See? She could do this. She wasn't going to lose touch with reality the very first day.

"I don't even have a hat," Johnny pointed out. "But seriously? Fine, tell you what, find me when we get to the school and I'll really show off. If you believe me after that, you owe me a date. If I can't convince you, I owe you dinner. I'd offer to shake on it, but I may be too hot to handle right now."

Or she could refuse the challenge, but what was the fun in that?

"I have a boyfriend," Evie said automatically.

Which was...probably still true? He'd promised to wait for her through the summer. For a price, a traitorous voice in her mind whispered, but she ignored it. She was good at ignoring voices in her head. Was he still be willing to wait for her when he found out she was going to a boarding school in a whole other state?

"Oh. Well, I do have a rule about that. If you have a boyfriend, we can only get together if you're looking for an excuse to break it off. Otherwise, you are in the friend zone," Johnny said. "Of course, you'll still find out that I'm telling the truth anyway, so feel free to accept the challenge whenever you free up or need an excuse."

See how helpful he was? How could you doubt his heroism, Evie?

"Aww shucks," Evie said snapping her fingers. "Well, I'll just keep that ever-so-generous offer in mind should I need to break up with Brandon."

Rich, handsome, normal Brandon. Because that was a thing that was going to happen anytime soon.

"Glad to see you're real high-minded about it, Torch."
