BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge- Saturday morning

A few days ago Gwen saw New York destroyed and drowned and her friend/roommate/surrogate brother type was presumed dead for a while- got a really amazing obituary for his alter-ego and everything. Today she was waiting for a portal that was going to take her to a school in Maryland. She was actually looking forward to school, just to get back to doing normal things again, but the timing was weird.

She seemed to be the first one here, and the banner meant she was probably in the right seat, so.

Gwen would be the sullen-looking girl sitting under the glittery Fandom High banner and showing too much midriff. And occasionally brushing at the top of her head with her hand because she was convinced the glitter was probably raining down on her.

This was an international school for crazy kids? Weird.

"That's a lot of glitter to go through for a joke if it isn't," Evie drawled, giving the girl a smile. "Even if it is, that's still a lot of glitter."

"I've never seen so much in one place," Mara agreed.

Palpatine wasn't really big on glitter.

Palpatine was evil, sure, but even he had his limits.

"Probably because it all congregated here," Evie said, shaking her head at the sign. "I'm pretty sure this thing caused a glitter shortage in the rest of the world."

"Well, as long as we leave it all here, we might have accidentally saved humanity," Mara offered.

"There's no way that's going to happen," Evie said glumly, wiping at the sheen of glitter that had somehow attached itself to her the moment she walked into the lounge. "I think we'll actually be spreading it wherever we go."

"Like a disease," Mara agreed.

"Or a particularly spangly fungus," Evie said. "And we'll be mentioned in all the papers as the originators of the great sparkle blight of 2014."

"Despised before we even get to campus," Mara said, shaking her head sadly.

"Maybe they'll turn us around and send us home!"

Evie, stop sounding so hopeful.

"I'm Evie Greene, by the way. Maybe we should introduce ourselves before the angry mob comes on the scene."

"Well, I don't know," Mara said. "If there's a mob coming, I don't think I want them to be able to know my name. You might sell me out."

Stop overthinking this, Mara.

...Evie couldn't tell if the other girl was joking around or honestly paranoid. Either was a distinct possibility.

"Don't you think it's more likely I'll sell you out if we don't have some kind of connection?" she asked. "Wouldn't it be safer to have an us-versus-them mentality going in?"

Mara wasn't exactly used to working as an us anywhere, but she was trying to blend in as a teenager and not a tiny assassin, and so..."Sure," Mara said. "I'm Mara Jade."

"Mara Jade? That's really pretty," Evie exclaimed. "I feel like there should be some kind of Greene/Jade pun made, but that's not really my style. I think I'll settle for nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you as well," Mara said with a tiny smile. "Why are you coming to this school?"

Yeah, that was an instant smile killer. Unconsciously, Evie hunched over a little, dropping her eyes to the floor. "Same reason as everyone else, I guess. Or are you asking what boxes the doctors ticked off on my application specifically?"

Sorry, Mara. You had to be at least friendship level four to unlock a laundry list of Evie's various crazies.

Mara furrowed her brow in confusion. "Doctors?"

"Yeah, why?" Evie asked, suddenly uncomfortable. Had she said too much? "Did your parents just decide to send you here instead?"

"Something like that," Mara said, nodding.

Because "I'm on orders from the Emperor" was just not going to be admitted to.

They could both not talk about things from their background! That was like bonding, right?

"Oh," she said, with a nod. "Yeah, my mom just signed off on it. How'd you get a brochure?"

You know, if there wasn't a doctor handing it out.

"One of my tutors got it," Mara said, "and it caught their attention. A school in a different galaxy was an opportunity they couldn't pass down."

DAMMIT, MARA, YOU HAD BEEN DOING SO WELL. SO. WELL.

"Different...galaxy?" she asked. Maybe, since Mara was from England or something, it was some kind of slang that Evie was just unfamiliar with? "Because, like, it's in America?"

She'd been told this planet was primitive, but still.

"...sure," Mara said slowly.

Evie was willing to go with that. "Cool," she said with a nod.
