BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge- Saturday morning

A few days ago Gwen saw New York destroyed and drowned and her friend/roommate/surrogate brother type was presumed dead for a while- got a really amazing obituary for his alter-ego and everything. Today she was waiting for a portal that was going to take her to a school in Maryland. She was actually looking forward to school, just to get back to doing normal things again, but the timing was weird.

She seemed to be the first one here, and the banner meant she was probably in the right seat, so.

Gwen would be the sullen-looking girl sitting under the glittery Fandom High banner and showing too much midriff. And occasionally brushing at the top of her head with her hand because she was convinced the glitter was probably raining down on her.

"I'd really only accept glitter if there were cookies included," Travis said, glancing around and then shrugging. "I see no cookies. Not a very warm welcome, in my opinion."

He was starving, okay.

"Glitter's an interesting touch, though."

"Sorry. All you get is a banner and some classmates," Johnny said, chuckling at the joke about the warm welcome.

That had to be a joke. He was talking to the Human Torch. The world famous adventurer. For it to not be a joke, he would have had to not know who Johnny was.

Oh Johnny, he was going to disappoint you but he'd take credit for the unintentional joke!

"Guess I'm okay with that for now." Though, he hoped this bus ride wasn't too long because he didn't want to end up asleep with his faced smashed against the bus window. "I'm Travis. Fellow classmate."

"Johnny," although he was sure Travis already knew that. "Nice to meet you."

"Yeah, you too," he said, nodding and showing no real recognition of the name. "You hear because of special circumstances too?"

Well, Gwen had said that was a thing with this place.

"After the tsunami hit Manhattan, I'm still not ready to go back to New York," Johnny explained. "So going to a boarding school down the coast sounds reasonable enough right now."

Travis's eyes widened at that statement.

"When was there a tsunami in Manhattan?" he asked, blinking. "I don't remember the weather channel going on and on about that lately."

Maybe it'd happened during the five years he'd been dead but, for some reason, he didn't think so.

"Geez, we've got time travel or alternate world stuff going on all over the place," Johnny said. "For the record, Magneto causes it, but don't take that as an excuse to hate on all the mutants, okay? Most of them are completely cool."

Travis squinted and then pinched himself just to make sure he wasn't still asleep in Kyle's truck. Nope, he was actually standing there, listening to Johnny talk about tsunamis and someone named Magneto.

There was only one reply for that. "Huh?" All eloquence.

"... Does any of that make sense to you? Captain America? The Ultimates?" Johnny checked. "Wait, let's focus on the important thing here. You know who I am, right?"

"I know you said your name was Johnny." Other than that...? Travis shrugged. "Should I know who you are? You a child actor who grew up and is trying for a comeback?"

It was the first thing that came to mind.

"Holy crap, this is crazy," Johnny said. "I've been warned not to do this in airports, so I'm only going to do it for a couple seconds."

"Flame on, but only a little." Johnny used his thumb like a lighter, flicking it against the inside of his index finger. And as soon as the thumb was raised, it was on fire. After a couple seconds, the flame disappeared.

"How did you...?"

Travis found himself looking for a lighter or a match but there wasn't anything in Johnny's hands and he couldn't see anything on the ground either that Johnny might have subtly dropped.

"Huh?" Still very eloquent. "I can't do that."

Duh.

"Johnny Storm. The Human Torch," Johnny said. "You might just be from a world where I sadly never become completely awesome. Or just haven't yet. I'm not an expert on this kind of stuff, so I'm guessing."

"Could be." But he was definitely going to check into it the first time he got to go back to Kansas. "What are you doing here if you're able to do...that?"

Travis figured someone with a talent like that had to have better things to do.

"After that tsunami I mentioned, I kind of want to lay low for a while," Johnny said.

He had a unique definition of 'lay low.'

"So, you're gonna go to school?" It wouldn't have been Travis's first choice but to each his own. He knew his own experiences were coloring those thoughts, though. "Love academics that much?"

"Pft, no, hate it," Johnny said. "But everything else turned out crappy, so it's worth a shot."

"Wouldn't be my first choice either," Travis said, shaking his head. "Everything must have been really bad for you to turn to school as a last resort kind of thing."

"Yeah, it's not the best situation back home right now," Johnny said. "But whatever. Regular school might be nice. Only one way to find out."

"I guess if it doesn't suit you, you can just up and leave, right?" Travis guessed. "If you ever get the urge to just disappear into a forest, least you know you'll have campfires covered."
