Library, Friday [All Day]

Look, Constantine hadn't managed to survive this long without being able to sense when some magical shitestorm was brewing. It was oily and nasty, and so he was in the library today, reinforcing the wards and making sure that nothing was leaking out of Special Collections.

He was pretty sure he was dealing with a gnome invasion over in the 392.5s, but he was going to ignore it for now. So long as they didn't make off with any Fairy Brides, he wasn't going to stop them. Besides, the kids shouldn't be over there anyway.

The Fandom High Library was open, and cotton candy is not allowed around the books.

After her traumatic experience on the ferris wheel, Rapunzel had run all the way up to the school, her hair in her arms and a small bump visible over her eye from where she'd hit her head. She had thought about running back to the dorms to heal it, but that wouldn't help anything, and -- this was just bigger than her and a bump on the head.

She settled down at a table with an armload of books -- it wasn't as though there was a whole lot else she could do to help, and...well. When something made her afraid, or she didn't understand it, she looked in books for the answers. It seemed like a good place to start, for her.

Hannibal might not have a magical bone in his body, but he did have a very finely honed sense of survival. Something was off, and in the past that had meant the library was the place to find answers.

So rather than heading home to Baltimore after class, he'd dropped his things off at his home on the island, changed to sturdier shoes, made several thermoses of coffee, and headed back to the school.

The cannibal was in, and probably wouldn't mind sharing his coffee with other library goers (it wasn't people).

Rapunzel had been huddled in a corner with her books for hours, hair draped around herself almost like a security blanket. She was poring through texts on carnivals and circuses and fairs, and they were all starting to blur together, when --

"Wait a second," she said softly, bolting up. "Wait a second. I think I found something!"

She peered closer at the photo (http://iambicnut.com/rpg/misc/wicked/worldsfair.jpg), frowning. That was the same logo, wasn't it? Wasn't it?

Hannibal heard her, turned, then frowned a little. Even if she hadn't been injured, she was clearly out of sorts. He got up, bringing his bag with him as he headed over to her.

"Are you quite all right?" He indicated her bruise. "May I take a look?"

"Um. I -- okay." It was easier to let him look at her injury than explain that she could take care of it herself, and plus, it was awfully nice of Dr. Lecter to even be concerned. She'd never been examined by a doctor before, after all.

"Dr. Lecter, I think I found something about the scary carnival," she added quietly, holding still so he could look at her head.

"Oh?" Hannibal gently moved her hair aside and checked the bump. "Any dizziness or nausea?" It didn't look like a concussion, but better to ask. People could be rather fragile.

"None and none. I banged my head on the ferris wheel," Rapunzel said quietly, clearly still a bit upset about that but she was insistent she tell someone what she found, still. "Dr. Lecter, there's a picture of this carnival in a book and it's from 1893. That's not...normal, right?"

Maybe time-traveling-slash-immortal carnivals were just another thing she didn't know about!

Satisfied it did seem to be only a bump, Hannibal leaned back and thought about her find for a moment. "Unusual, perhaps, but there are carnivals that have been around a very long time. Family businesses, mostly."

He sighed. "Not to mention that in this place, it wouldn't surprise me to learn they were from 1893 and got here through a portal."

That was the problem with Fandom - what was creepy and what was just the island?

"Maybe," Rapunzel agreed hesitantly, though now she was eagerly pulling the book over to show him. "Look, Dr. Lecter, that's the same writing and everything on that carriage-y thing, right? That's -- look, I think I'm from the past, too, but I also didn't get here in a creepy mist. There's something wrong here."

"Creepy mist?" He hadn't known about that. Hannibal scrutinized the picture. He had a very good visual memory, and yes - "It does look very much the same." Down to a few little quirks you'd have expected to change over the years. "What does the book have to say about it?"

He stood and held out a hand to her. "Why don't you come to one of the tables? I have coffee and fruit."

"Okay," Rapunzel said hesitantly, hoping that he'd brought cream and sugar for the coffee, even if she knew that you were supposed to just enjoy the coffee for its own flavor.

Priorities, Rapunzel.

She gathered up her hair and the book, adding, "I'm gonna keep reading this for answers, though -- it doesn't really seem to say anything about it, so far? Just that this was the Chicago World's Fair, whatever that means."

He had demerara sugar and organic cream, if that would do. He set everything before her on the table.

He had priorities, too.

"That was a huge festival at the time, with pavilions for many different countries. Does it say what this carnival was doing there?"

Riley had taken one look at the carnival and gotten a little freaked out. He didn't remember any kind of carnival doing that to him so he wandered into the place where he felt pretty safe.

And when he noticed other people around, he guessed that he wasn't the only one who thought things were a little off.

If there was one thing that Daphne had learned from being a member of the Mystery Inc gang was that most carnivals were bad. Spooky carnivals that showed up suddenly were even worse.

She was just going to hang out here in the library and see if she could do any helpful research.
