Bond had emailed his class to meet him at the front of the school building today, where he handed each of them a map of the island marked with a numbered grid and a sealed envelope.
"Good afternoon," he said. "I trust you all had a quiet weekend. There are a number outdoor activities based around the idea of using various navigation tools to find particular points or objects, for example, orienteering uses a map and compass, while geocaching uses GPS receivers. For today's class we'll be doing a simple exercise roughly midway between the two.
"I've placed several tokens at various places on the island, one for each of you. Your envelopes contain some simple clues you can use to triangulate the grid references for where a token is hidden. I would like each of you to have brought me your token by the end of class.
"You may work alone or together as you see fit."
