Fun With Microwaves!, Wednesday

A few weeks ago, during a Skype call with Jane, Thor had mentioned his workshop plans for the second half of the summer. At first, she'd given him that look of fond exasperation he'd come to know fairly well, but then... she'd launched in to an excited explanation of something called 'plasma' and an experiment he ought to let his students try.

"Today, we are microwaving grapes," he informed everyone once they'd assembled in the Danger Shop. "I am told the results can be quite spectacular, and will produce something called 'plasma', the same substance that stars are comprised of. Science, especially Midgardian science, is not my field of study, but I have been provided with these handouts should you like to learn more about plasma."

See? This class could totally be educational even if it was mostly just 'let's see what happens when we do the thing'.

Cosette, absolute nerd that she was, heard 'the same substance that stars are comprised of' and was all over reading that handout. In fact, she got so caught up in it that . . . she completely forgot about microwaving grapes for a good twenty minutes.

By the time that she did remember, and was peering into the microwave with rapt fascination, she was already making a mental note to go to the library and look up even more about plasma.

Admittedly, in part, because the idea of stars being made of something similar to what was in a grape was bizarre and brainbreaky to someone who came from a time where people still thought taking baths caused plague.

"The grapes also contain something called 'liquid', which the oceans are made out of," Joker snarked. Because who hadn't heard of plasma?

But then the grapes made pretty glowing lights in the microwave, and he watched in fascination.

Cecil was pretty much stuck on "science! neat!" and watching the grapes raptly.
