Fun in the Sun, Monday, Period 4

Bond had informed his students to meet him down at Serenity Cove, where he waited for them on the sand, flipping a frisbee between his hands.

"Good afternoon," he greeted them. "And welcome to Fun in the Sun, where we're going to be spending the rest of the term playing various games and doing other outdoor activities, so if you're not actually listed for this class, you're welcome to stay anyway."

"Now as is traditional we're going to start off with introductions, but to make things more interesting, we're going to combine it with simple game of frisbee, where we toss each other this disc while we talk." He tossed the disc to a random student and waited for them to toss it back. "Like so."

"Then once we've gotten introductions out of the way, I have some more discs so you can split up and play with each other, ideally while asking each other questions so you can get to know your fellow students a bit better."

He tossed the disc towards a (different) random student. "You first."

Definitely get a frisbee thrown at you!

Will caught the frisbee when it was his turn and tossed it from hand to hand.

"Will West. I'm a junior and came from Wisconsin so weather like this is really a change of pace," he said and then tossed the frisbee to someone else.

"Summers where I grew up tended to be milder than here," Bond agreed. "Of course, so did the winters."

"Yeah, the heat here's pretty...stifling," Will said. "Like breathing into a hot, wet towel."

"People do say it's not the heat it's the humidity," Bond said. "Usually while they're not in either."

Edward caught it with a casual grace and a grin. "Edward Kenway," he announced. "I come from a fair few hundreds of years away from this time, or so I'm told. I hope I'm not the only one here with a fondness for the seaside."

He tossed the frisbee to the next student.

"Well, I do like to live beside the seaside," Bond said. Because he was a smartarse. He tilted his head at Edward's accent. "Welsh?"

"Aye," Edward said, sounding pleased about that. "Swansea born, as a matter of fact. We also had our fair share of seaside to live by."

"I spent time in the Brecon Beacons when I was younger. Beautiful country." As much as he'd been able to admire the landscape while instructors had marched him and two hundred other SBS hopefuls up and down it.

"I miss it," Edward admitted. "My family's moved to Bristol since, it ain't the same."

Jalian caught the disc easily, then spent a couple moments figuring out its aerodynamics and how to toss it.

"Jalian d'Arsennette y ken Selvren. It gets hotter than this in Ken Selvren lands. And the ocean is on the wrong side here."

What? It was!

She tossed the disc to the next student.

"It's because we're on the east coast," Bond said. "If we were on the west coast, the Pacific would be on that side."

Jalian nodded. "Ken Selvren lands are in California," which she sounded out carefully.

Kira was very happy when she caught the frisbee without embarrassing herself. "Um, I'm Kira Yukimura, and I'm from New York so... I've been to the Jersey Shore a bunch of times? But I'm used to nice weather and all."

Bond nodded. "Let's hope this summer stays in the nice weather range," he said.

Throw frisbees at each other!

Will might have cheated and used his powers to pinpoint the frisbee in the air when it was coming at him to make sure he didn't miss catching it.

Jalian had no problems catching the thing, but the balance and weight of it were like nothing she'd thrown before. So if she was throwing it more like she wanted to injure someone with it, it wasn't personal!

[*headdesk* ty]

Will's reflexes meant he could catch the aggressively thrown frisbee and flip it back Jalian's way easily enough.

Jalian caught it with a nod. "Where is Wisconsin?"

"North of here," Will told her. "Near Canada where it's colder. The winters are really, really tough."

Jalian frowned. "I haven't been here for winter yet. I read books about the weather, but the numbers meant nothing to me."

"Was there no winter where you're from?" Will wondered.

"Of course we had winter!" She rolled her eyes at him. "But we don't measure it like here. It's just cold."

"Hey, it's a valid question," Will said in response to the eye rolling. "You do know people come from different planets, right? Winter isn't a thing everywhere."

With a reluctant nod, Jalian conceded the point. "I do not come from a different planet. I come from this one. This one in a different timeline," she added to be fair. "I have never been to Wisconsin. What is it like there? Are there freeways?" Jalian liked freeways.

"I think so, yeah," Will said, tossing her the frisbee after a second. "They're not nearby where I was staying but they do exist. You a fan of freeways?"

"I like them!" Jalian caught the disc. "They are wonderful for walking." She sent the thing back towards him, trying to get it a bit closer to the way the others were tossing it. "This is a very odd game. Is the disc a representation of something?"

"No, it's just for fun," Will told her, catching her toss easily. "I mean, maybe someone somewhere thinks of it as a representation of something but I just think of it as a fun beach activity."

"Why are they for beaches?" Jalian wondered. "It has nothing to do with sand or water. Unless you drink out of it." She eyed the slight lip on the thing dubiously.

"Does one thing always have to connect with another?" Will wondered. "You can use one anywhere. The beach is just where they're most popular. Beaches are for fun and frisbees are fun. Beaches are for getting sun and you get sun while you're playing frisbee. "

He shrugged.

"Other places aren't for fun?" Jalian raised an eyebrow at him as she sent the disc sailing back.

Okay, now she was just trolling. Even if she didn't know that's what it was called.

"Not as fun as the beach," Will said, shrugging. "It's the number one place for fun in everyone's heart."

That wasn't true at all.

Jalian eyed him dubiously, but just shrugged. "I like freeways. But this isn't bad."

No frisbees needed.
