Faculty Meeting, Wednesday (After Classes)

Putting together a faculty meeting, Zoe realized, wasn't that different from putting together a Student Council meeting. Today, she'd set things up in the faculty lounge; there was food - donuts, coffee, and cold drinks - and clean chairs and tables for people to sit at. Once most of the staff had arrived and gotten something to eat, she went to the front of the room.

"Good afternoon, everyone. Thank you all for coming," she said. "I'll admit, I don't really have any business to talk about. This is more of an opportunity for you all to have a chance to talk to each other about how things are going, or about the students, or anything you might need from me and the others. Does anyone have anything to bring up?"

Bo wasn't totally sure where her position stood on the line between faculty and... Fosse, but somebody had to keep Anakin from force-choking anybody over a pastry, right?

Exactly: Bo was here for the doughnuts. Or at the moment, a cream-filled Long-John and facial reactions to same that were entirely inappropriate for a professional atmosphere.

"Oh my God, Bo." Kate was pretty super glad to see her, yeah. That already put Bo several steps above Fosse, at least if you asked Kate.

Also.

"... You need to get a room with that pastry."

Bo considered this, then shook her head.

And wiped cream off the corner of her mouth.

"That would make it too hard for the rest of them to join in when I'm done with this one."

"Greedy," Kate decided. "Also somewhat inappropriate."

She grinned.

"Hi."

"That's what I'm here for - to make everybody else feel more professional." Nope. Still the doughnuts. "Speaking of, look at you, all grown-up and responsible for the mental health and well-being of minors and shit."

She only said these things because it made her feel less freaked out at being responsible for the mental health and well-being of minors and shit.

Kate rolled her eyes and looked wry. "Yeah, I don't know. I feel like I walked in the wrong door or something, I'm basically a kid. But, if Mitchell could do it, right?"

"You'll be great -- especially considering how much subject expertise you have in your class topic." Bo grinned. "And if you wanna feel less like a kid? Kenzi's teaching."

"... Isn't she like eleven years old?"

Yes, she felt older already.

"Give or take eight years." Bo dabbed chocolate off her fingertips with a half-crumpled napkin. "So how is the teaching actually going, aside from feeling like you're sitting at the wrong size desk?"

Kate's nose scrunched up in thought. "It's going... pretty well, actually," she said and yes, she sounded almost a little surprised by that. "I mean, no one's run away screaming or crying yet, and it seems I may actually be teaching some people something."

Which seemed like a pretty novel idea to her.

"I mean some of it is just random 21st century things, but still."

"How exactly do you teach being awesome?" Bo wanted to know. "I can kind of picture how you'd teach, say, How Not To Be A Douche -- Lesson 1 would be never start any reply to an internet comment with the word Um -- but how do you do the opposite?"

Kate shrugged. "Mostly, I just try to teach the right kind of attitude," she said. She made a vague, unhelpful gesture with her hand. "Like this certain kind of positivity about yourself. That kind of thing."

"I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me?" Public access cable with daily affirmations from Stuart Smalley had a lot to answer for in Bo's young life.

"That about sums it up, yeah," Kate confirmed. If with a tiny snort. "Think I even have some students who really really actually need it. I wasn't expecting that."

"Some of them do come in that way." Bo nodded. Like a grownup who hadn't been just exactly as screwed-up and self-doubting as these kids, when she first hit the island. "Fandom tends to beat it out of them pretty quick, though."

Kitty tried not to look at Bo while she was doing that, but it was too amusing not to.

So she gave her a thumbs up instead.

"I refoofe..." Bo, do not talk with your mouth full; aside from being rude, That's What She Said is only funny if you can hear what she said. "I refuse to pretend this shouldn't be illegal in at least the 48 contiguous states and possibly Puerto Rico," is What She Said once it was polite to do so.

That was in fact What She Said, yes.

"Now I'm sorry I didn't grab one of those," Kitty admitted.

That was also... actually, that was frequently more like What He Wished She Said.

Bo grinned. "This is one of those days when I'm not willing to rule out that there actually is a god of biscuits, and that he actually does own that place."

"Might want to melt a chocolate chip or two when you get a chance in his honor," Kitty suggested.

"Where 'melt' is a euphemism for 'eat?'" Bo asked hopefully.

"Sure. It'd be disrespectful to let it go to waste," Kitty decided.

While Hannibal's opinions on mass-marketed doughnuts probably weren't appropriate for public, it was always interesting to see somebody enjoying their food.

Particularly when they were enjoying it that much. He was hard-put not to laugh, but restrained himself.
