Want to be a Hero?, Friday, 4th Period

Having informed them to meet at the salle for today's class, Cara looked entirely too cheerful in a way that couldn't be explained by mood rocks as she waited for her students to arrive.

"If we had actually been spending the past few weeks heroing, by now we would've likely pissed someone off enough for them to try to do something about it, namely either trying to kill us themselves or paying someone else to. So today we're going to be learning a little about putting the other guy down before they can put you in the ground."

"First things first, there's no such thing as dirty fighting when someone is trying to kill you, your aims to to stop them in the most effective and efficient way possible, which means if the best way to do that is to kick some guy in the balls, then kick them there." And if the best way was to kill them, just ignore her like Richard did.

"Now being able to use weapons changes things up, and if you ask very nicely our lovely TA might show you her knives sometime, but since there's no time to train you how not to break or cut off your own fingers, we're just going to focus on unarmed fighting today."

Cara went on to demonstrate how to land a decent punch or kick, as well as some fairly vicious throws and grapples, beating a poor training dummy to within an inch of its non-life in the process. She finished up by showing them how to pull their blows. Not that that part had belatedly occurred to her or anything.

"Now pair up and try some of that out. Have fun."

Or wince in sympathy as she beat up that poor, defenceless training dummy.

Raven wasn't so much wincing in sympathy as watching in fascination. She'd taken a weapons class before and had some self-defense training, but it was still really neat to see a woman doing the fighting.

Kathy was watching intently. After her rather humiliating defeat at the hands of that scary tooth-demon-thing, she realized she needed all the training she could get.

Because beating each other up is an effective way to learn, really!

Raven looked around for a partner. Preferably someone who wouldn't get too mad if she occasionally rearranged her own joints in order to dodge blows.

"Hi," Kathy said, giving Raven a shy smile. "Umm, do you want to pair up? Though before you say yes, I should probably, uhh, tell you a few things about what I can do."

Forgive her for looking a little nervous, Raven. She'd never really sparred before and definitely not with powers.

Huh. Giving people advance warning of your powers. Raven hadn't even thought of that. "That sounds fair. I can do some stuff I'll warn you about, too."

"Really?" Now Kathy was looking relieved and a little intrigued. "Oh, that's awesome! I didn't want to be unfair about a spar, but I kinda can't control some of it, you know? What can you do?"

Wait. Was that rude? That might be a little rude. She quickly added, "I'm, umm, really fast. And I, err, bounce. That sounds dumber than it is. Maybe I should call it something like...enhanced agility?"

"Enhanced agility sounds good. Very scientific," Raven assured her. "Is it an inborn talent?" This was her nice way of asking 'are you a mutant?' without possibly offending Kathy. "I can change shape a little." With a very loose definition of 'a little'. "So I'm really flexible, and I'm told I'm pretty strong for my size. Nothing like super-strength or anything, though."

Well, she did think of herself as a mutant, but that came from reading too many comic books! ~~The canon/meta headaches this girl gives me...~~

"I...don't actually know?" Kathy said with a shrug. "Like, I didn't fall into a vat of radioactive goo and I'm no Barry Plodder. They just kind of developed last semester. I'm still trying to get the hang of them, you know?"

On her trek to becoming a superhero, because that's obviously what one did when they discovered they had super powers, right?

"Do you wanna start and we'll just see where this takes us?"

What else were you supposed to do with them, become some kind of secret assassin terrorist?

"Takes practice," Raven said. "I still sometimes lose control over mine and I've had them as long as I remember. I haven't done a lot of sparring, so I'm not sure how good I'll be. Don't freak out if my eyes turn yellow or something, okay?"

Pfft! That would be ridiculous!

"I promise not to freak," Kathy agreed easily. "So long as you promise not to laugh if I trip and end up bouncing on my butt halfway across the salle."

"Cross my heart," Raven promised. She stepped back and settled into a decent karate stance. "Let's give it a try."

Kathy didn't know the first thing about karate. Or any martial art, really. She was a gymnast!

But there were a lot of gymnastic moves that could be adapted to fighting, which was pretty much her entire plan of attack. That and being too fast for anyone to (hopefully!) catch. Both those plans had taken a not-entirely-metaphorical beating last weekend, but maybe fighting someone not made of hate and teeth would help?

Rather than attacking straight on, Kathy crouched, then sprang up into the air, almost brushing the ceiling. Tucking herself into a loose ball, she aimed to land in a spot behind Raven.

As long as her aim was decent, that would not be a problem. Raven was a little busy gaping at the jump to really follow through on any plan of attack. "That's very nifty!"

When it came to gymnastics it was! Experimenting with bows and arrows might not yield the same result.

But fortunately, it was gymnastics they were talking about, which meant that Kathy landed where she was expecting to.

"I know right?" she agreed. "Sorry! Sorry! I mean, thank you! It's just that it's still so new, I get really excited about it."

"I don't think you have to apologize," Raven said. "There's nothing wrong with knowing you're good at things."

Then, remembering they were meant to be sparring, she swung her leg up in nice high side kick -- with very little force behind it. Actually trying to hurt the girl she was just complimenting seemed kind of awkward and rude.

"Tell that to my mom," Kathy muttered, bending over backwards to avoid the high kick.

Her hands hit the floor and pushed off against them and bounced back up on her feet, to launch a kick or two of her own, her feet up at shoulder-height.

The way Raven's shoulder dipped had little to do with typical human skeletal structures. "My foster mom always wants me to be modest, too. I think mostly it's so she can pretend I don't exist, though."

While Will waited for a partner, he took some time to smack the practice dummy a few times. He didn't tend to be much of a fighter so this should be interesting.

At least one of them would be happy to 'spar' with you if you asked, it would surely end well.

"Most of my knives, anyway," Surreal added cheerfully from her spot in the room. "I can't reveal all my hiding spots. That would be stupid."

Hint, today there was one in her hair, one in each boot, one in her bodice, one at the small of her back, and four vanished where she could call them in any time.

"And some of us enjoy the challenge of finding them," Cara replied dryly.

What? She'd already forgone asking Surreal to help demonstrate sparring as she doubted any fights the students got into would end like theirs usually did. That was more than enough restraint for one class.

Whooo! Punchy class!
