"I've been given to understand that some of you had your emotions manipulated by the island last week," Ender said. He was sitting cross-legged on the grass of the dorm lawn, as per usual, a glass of water in his hand. "So I propose we talk about that on a primary note this week. Did you experience that? Did you know anyone who experienced it? Did it teach you anything about yourself, or was it a pain in the ass? There are a range of issues coming into play when these things occur - questions of consent as well as what this did to you. I'm opening the floor today to any and all of them."

He sat back.

"Otherwise, it's Memorial Day today," he said. "I've personally served in my home's armed forces. It was an unusual program, but not all of us came back alive. Many of us didn't come home whole. I've heard and seen of many brave people who died, serving humanity to their utmost best. They deserve some thought today. I don't care if you want to do it in discussion in this class or later, but please keep it in mind."

"So who are you mourning today?" Ender said.

Besides the obvious.

"The Jedi I trained with," Cade said softly. "Even if they got away, I haven't seen them since, so I can guess what happened."

Ender nodded. "What were they like?"

"Young," Cade said with a tiny smile. "Earnest. Trying to do the right thing."

"Like most young Jedi," Ender said. His smile was just as small.

"Yeah," Cade said. "I was always a little edgier than they really wanted. Up late, missing dawn meditations, kissing apprentices..."

Ender let out a soft laugh. "Rebelling against your father?"

"It's an old tune, but there's a reason it's been playing so long," Cade said, nodding.

"Did the others like you?"

"The less uptight ones," Cade replied. "The ones who didn't care what the Masters thought."

"That does sound like your kind of crowd," Ender noted.

Cade ran his hand through his hair sheepishly. "Well...yeah."

"That's nothing to be embarrassed about," Ender said wryly. "Like calls to like, especially when you're a young teenager."

"I've found some here, too," Cade said. "Well, Atton was a mistake, but."

"Maybe," Ender said vaguely. "You're friends with Sparkle, too, aren't you? Anyone else I know?"

"Jim Kirk, but he went home," Cade replied. "Natalie, but she's off with Peter..."

"And god knows why," Ender said.

"Glutton for punishment?" Cade suggested.

"That's the only possibility I can think of," Ender said dryly.

"He's not that terrible," Cade said after a moment. "I'm not sure he'd want to hear that, though."

"He probably would, actually," Ender said. "At this stage in his life, he's nothing if not insecure about himself."

"I'm not sure hearing it from me would help anything," Cade replied.

"Well, he doesn't know who you are," Ender pointed out gently. "Not that I'm necessarily advocating you shouting it to every one of our relatives if you don't want to."

"'Hey Peter, I'm your great nephew and it turns out that you aren't thought of as an enormous pillock?'" Cade tried out.

"'My great what?'" Ender said, mimicking Peter's way of speaking quite convincingly.
