Practical Philosophy, Monday

"There are those of us who come here believing very strongly in duty," Ender said. "Others who come here to escape it - and some to who it's absolutely not a part of their lives."

He smiled a little.

"I had a mentor, once," he said. "I was told that people were free, unless humanity needed them, and that humanity never asked us to be happy, merely to act on its behalf - for its survival. Happiness, he felt, was a luxury that at times we could scarcely afford. To opt out of doing our duty at such a time was the worst crime imaginable: a crime of stupidity."

He took a sip of water. "I've met people who disagreed, since," he said. "I've also met people whose lives were so intricately bound to these rules they didn't even know where they stopped and the rules began. Some of you have already made your views fairly clear already, but I'm curious as to everyone else's input, too.

"How important is duty? Do we people all carry some grand responsibility to our species, or should we exist only for ourselves and the development of our self? And if we live for duty, then when does that end? Is there some point where all of us may be afforded personal freedom, or are we perpetually tied to our responsibilities, whether we flee from them or not?"

Barry raised an eyebrow at that. "Nerving up to jump on a bed?" he asked incredulously. "Are you fucking kidding me? It's a bed!"

"And beds are made for sleeping on," Elsa reasoned. "If they were meant to be jumped on, we'd all be sleeping on... what are they called? Trampolines?"

Barry rolled his eyes. "Beds are bouncy," he reasoned. "And much more comfortable to land on."

"Until the bed frame breaks?"

It was not made for small children jumping on it. Elsa was pretty sure it was also not made for teenagers using it.

Clearly Elsa had not been around for sex pollen week. If the beds hadn't broken then...

"It's an effing bed frame. It can be fixed or replaced. What's the big deal if it breaks?"

Elsa was going to spend sex pollen week wishing she had fire powers so she could burn the whole place down. Cold showers would do nothing for her.

"If it breaks while I'm jumping on it...?"

"Sure. What's going to happen if you break the bed?"

"I could... fall... off?"

This discussion was not actually working in her favour.

"... And get hurt."

Shut up.

"Yes. That three or four feet to the ground can be fucking deadly," Barry teased.

"Five or six can do a fair bit of damage if you fall wrong," Elsa replied, frowning a little and blushing a little more. "Or if you land on something. There's enough inertia there. If people can break bones landing wrong on their wrist from a slip on the ice," and she knew a thing or two about slipping on ice, "then I certainly can by toppling off a bed without expecting to."

And she could not, could not afford to get hurt in any way that might result in a trip to the clinic, where people would have to actually touch her skin in order to put her back together again while her focus was compromised due to pain.

"Does anyone tell you that you worry too much?" Barry said with a sigh.

"I like to think I worry exactly the proper amount," Elsa sniffed. "And no. No they have not."

... Because she really didn't give many people the opportunity to do so.

She could see where this was going.

"Yes, Barry?"

"I'll take that under advisement, Barry."

Maybe. Probably not.
