Basic Cookery, Period One

It really was a good thing the school had the Danger Shop, since it seemed to be a popular choice for today's classes.

"It occurs to me," Thor said, "that there are some of you with no experience with these devices at all. Now, I cannot tell you how they do what they do= my own understanding is simply that they harness a force that allows them to cook food at a much quicker rate than most other available methods here on Midgard." Did Asgard have microwaves? Maybe. Probably. But Thor never needed to know much about how they worked beyond the fact that they did.

"So, with apologies to those of you who are familiar with them, I thought we would spend today practicing how to heat up already-prepared meals."

Once again, each student had a microwave. They also had a variety of frozen dinners of various sizes, and different kinds of leftovers packed in tupperware containers.

"The ones in the boxes- 'frozen dinners'- come with instructions regarding timing, so if you're unsure of how to operate the microwave machine, I would suggest starting with these. If you are ready for more of a challenge, try the left-over portions from previous meals. These come with no instructions, and require you to use your best judgement. The best method is typically to heat these up in short intervals, taking it out in between to stir or otherwise check on your progress."

Microwaves again. Ichabod listened to the lecture, wondering what was really that wrong with a wood-burning stove. Not that he was very good at using those either, but at least there was no pressing of buttons involved.

Ichabod decided to play it safe and picked one of the 'frozen dinners', which looked reasonably appetizing judging from the illustration on the box. He following the instructions closely, he wrinkled his nose as he looked at the result.

"This bears little resemblance to the picture," he observed. "An it is still cold in the middle and almost burnt around the edges."

Gabriel's small apartment had a microwave so Nathan was familiar with one of these, at least. He put some microwaveable rice in the appliance and let it cook.

Elsa had at least been around the island long enough, at this point, to have learned that the microwave was an insidious creature that didn't listen to instructions. Much like the 'popcorn' button, which was full of lies, 'reheat' was a horrible temptress that led innocent victims only to tears.

She did go with the leftovers, mostly because she wasn't certain chicken was ever supposed to come in the shapes that were presented on the frozen dinner box, and checked to make certain nothing was actively exploding every thirty seconds or so.

Her faith in technology was extremely low.

Microwave leftovers were a perfectly acceptable meal solution as far as Kira was concerned. She picked out some meatloaf-looking thing and warmed it up, poking at it every 30 seconds or so and turning it to make it all just right.

Kaylin tried one of the dinners rather skeptically, but well, she'd certainly eaten worse and they seemed easy enough.
