Kenzi was so looking forward to this, you don't even know.

So as people filed into the classroom, she pointed them to the various arts & crafts tables, printer, laminator, and huge Maryland I.D. billboard that she'd put together and printed out with a camera in front of it.

"Welcome to Choose Your Own Adventure!" She beamed. "For those of you who don't know me, I'm Toni Soprano." She flicked up a Canadian I.D. "At least according to this piece of plastic. According to this one, I'm Ninotchka Alexandrovich." It had a really convincing Russian sickle on it, too. "Now, for some of the things we're doing this semester, you're going to need a legit-looking piece of plastic of your own. So pick a birthday -- one that's before 1993, that'll help -- and if you don't know what that means, ask your neighbor." She paused. "Or me, after you do a couple tries."

"After, I'm going to the Horseshoe Casino here in Baltimore. If you don't know what a casino is or Baltimore is, you can ask when we're on the bus." She grinned, then added, "And you don't have to come with me! Or any of us! That's where the 'choice' thing comes in. But wouldn't it be a shame to make all these, and not see if they work?"

"Ahhh. Well, it is good work, so yay for new skills? Where are you from? And is it a time-traveler thing, or a magic thing that you guys don't have electricity?"

"It seems to be an other world thing," Kaylin said. "We do have a great deal of magic, but we lack things such as cars and the machines that you use. You can buy magical lights for your house and mirrors to communicate with. If your very wealthy you could connect your mirror to the records, but I don't know anyone personally who did that. Most places don't have running water out stuff like that."

Kaylin had spent almost an hour in the shower the first time she'd figured out what it was for.

"Can anybody use those things?" Kenzi asked, intrigued. "Or do you need ot know magic to make 'em work? Wait, connect your mirror to the records? How does that work?"

"Well, sure," Kaylin said. "They wouldn't be much good otherwise. You just have to be magic to make them."

She considered how to explain the mirrors. "The one I have with me is just for communication. But if I was back in the Halls of Law and I need to find something I could touch the mirror and say 'records' and tell it what I wanted and it would show me. It could be pictures, text, audio, or video, depending on how it was saved or input."

"Hunh. So, set-up like our computers, but using magic and mirrors. Weeeeird. And cool." Kenzi took a second to study the girl's face. "Okay, we need to do your hair a little different for the photo, and maybe put a scarf around your neck or something so it doesn't look like you're wearing the exact same clothes if you go to use this today."

"I suppose I could put my hair down," Kaylin said. "And maybe if I put my jacket on and zipped it up?"

She took the stick out of her hair and let it down, brushing her hands through it to detangle it a bit.

"Like this?"

"That works," Kenzi decided. "Stand in front of our billboard for the photo! Oh, and don't smile too much. If the photo is too good, no one will believe it's real."

Kaylin stood in front of the billboard as directed and almost rolled her eyes. She figured that would work as not smiling too much.
