Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Soren was dressed in fairly standard modern teenage boy fare of jeans and a t-shirt, but the question made him frown, as he wasn't quite sure what she meant. "It's been one-thousand twenty-nine years since our forefathers first left Scandia?" he offered.

"We measure time differently than you do," Celia said, biting her lip worriedly. "Sorry to break it to you that way. I'd had high hopes, considering your clothes. Goodness, that's even more difficult, in a way. Um...do you have electricity at home? Computers?"

That would help, maybe.

"Of course we do," Soren said, and then thought about what she'd said about her own arrival here. They may not have measured time in the same way, but he could still do math and see that was more than a hundred years' difference. He was pretty sure electric lights existed, at least, but computers definitely would not have. "I can see how that might have been a shock to you," he admitted. "No pun intended."

"It was, but I've lived through it," Celia said, waving him off. "All right, then -- how about magic? Is that present at home for you? Because it is here, in spades."

It really would be easier for her if he said yes. Explaining magic being real without shocking him might take some doing.

"Magic is everywhere," Soren nodded. "It's good to know that there are some similarities."

"Exactly," she said with a broad smile. "Do you have any questions, then? If you've already been here before, I think most of the surprise has been taken out of it, probably."

Except for the time measurement, but still.

"What day is it?" Soren asked. To him, it was Freyasday, the fourteenth of Grassmonth, and yesterday had been the holiday Disir's Day, but that was one of the things that was different here, he knew.

"Saturday," Celia said carefully, watching him for a reaction. "May the third."

"Saturday," Soren echoed, testing the unfamiliar word on his tongue. "When I left, it was the fourteenth of Grassmonth. A Freyasday."

"I'm going to get you a calendar," Celia decided firmly. "That might help. We have seven days of the week here, and twelve months. Right now we're in the very beginnings of spring, which is one of our four seasons -- is that at least consistent with home?"

"Spring begins with Baldur's Night," Soren said with a nod. "That was six weeks ago," he couldn't help but smile, thinking of how nice it had been to see Astrid again.
