Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

It was always weird looking at people's name tags, but luckily Sia didn't have to do it for long before she found him. "Nathan? Hi, I'm Marasiah."

"Hi," he said, nervous but trying to hide it. "That's a...long name. Marasiah."

As long as no one asked him to write it down, he'd be fine, though. "I'm Nathan, yeah. Is this a school?"

Still trying to get his bearings and not be too freaked out that he seemed to be expected and all.

"You can call me Sia if that makes it easier." Everyone else did. "This is a school, yes. Were you not expecting to be here?"

If she seemed pretty cool about that, well. These things happened.

Nathan shook his head. "I was just in Scotland. Across the ocean. I barely knew this place, this country even existed."

And it was freaking him out how he seemed to be expected.

"I'm not good at school things."
notconflicted: (excuse me?)

"It's all right. At times this is barely a school," she assured him. "Do you know how you got here?"

"Not exactly," Nathan answered, shaking his head. "I know there was something that looked like a circle of light down an alleyway. When I threw a rock at it, it disappeared. And then I went through it and was suddenly here."

She didn't think it was too smart to go through a circle of light and definitely not when you threw something that disappeared into it, but she wasn't going to say that.

"It's all right. Things like that seem to happen to people from time to time here. Strange as that probably sounds," Sia offered.

Going through the circle of light thing had been the best option at the time. Easier than waiting around for a Hunter to descend and having to run again. This, at least, had made him almost completely disappear.

"I don't know if that's comforting or terrifying," he said, tugging on the end of his scarf just to give himself something to do. "If I wanted to, could I leave?"
notconflicted: (so...)

"It might be possible if you can go back the way you came, but if you can't, this is a good place to stay until you can," Sia told him. "To my knowledge no one has ever been stuck here permanently, so it's only a matter of time till you're back where you belong."

"Thanks," he said, offering her a small nod for the reassurance even if there was still uncertainty in his mind. "I guess it can't hurt to stay here since it seems like somehow I was expected to be here even if I didn't know I was supposed to be here."

"This place is strange that way," Sia said, because she had no explanation for that. "You at least ended up somewhere interesting."

"It seems that way," Nathan agreed with a nod. "An interesting place with a castle."

He'd spent a long time marveling at that when he'd first arrived. A long, long time.

"That is part of it. I'm not sure why we need classes in a castle, exactly, but I'm not complaining," Sia said. "Are there any questions you have?" She was sure there were probably a lot.

Nathan had a lot of questions but he also didn't want to ask too much and make himself too noticeable. He was relaxing but still tense and on his guard.

"What are the classes like?" That was something concerning there. He knew he had some deficits there that would be glaringly obvious depending on the subject.

"Mostly practical," she said. "We have classes on teamwork, cooking, music, and then there are ones on things like the beach and roller coasters. The more intellectual classes can be taken online."

"Not a lot of reading and writing involved?" he asked, perking up at the mention of cooking though. "I can't do either very well."

"Not in my experience, no. Though if you'd like to work on that, I'm sure we could get you some help there," she suggested. "Otherwise you can probably get by just fine."

[identity profile] halfbad.livejournal.com 2014-05-03 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Maybe." He was loathe to make anyone teach him since he just couldn't seem to get it together. "Do you like it here?"
notconflicted: (okay)

"I do. It has its downsides, but the upsides outweigh them. The people are interesting and from places I never would have expected, I learn a lot more in a hands on capacity than I would anywhere else, and it's hard to be bored for too long. You just have to keep an open mind."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Summer 2014]

[identity profile] halfbad.livejournal.com 2014-05-03 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm pretty sure I can do that." All things considered, he figured he'd been born with an open mind. "How's the weather at night here? Rain a lot? Warm?"

That'd probably be his last question but it was a pretty important one.
notconflicted: (calm)

"Cold in the winter, hot in the summer. We get four seasons here." She paused. "And sometimes it rains candy, or the like."

Had to get that out somehow.

Nathan wanted to question that last statement but he didn't. There was already enough in his head to deal with. The first statement was enough to please him into a small smile.

"Thank you," he said, nodding. "I appreciate your help."

"Not a problem. If you need anything, I'm in 317, you're always welcome," she told him.
