Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!


[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"If any templars ask about it, that's what it is," Anders said, then winked at Rapunzel. "But between the two of us, I can tell you I'm a mage and it's my staff."

"Okay!" Rapunzel vowed, actually meaning it in spite of the levity of her voice. A pause, and then, "What's a templar?"

She knew about the Knights Templar, sure, but she was pretty sure that wasn't what he was talking about.

"The bastards in charge of the Circle where I was before here," Anders explained. "They're like holy knights. Answer to the Chantry."

So yes, just like Knights Templar.

"You don't have them where you're from?"

"You mean like during the Crusades?" she said, frowning. "I mean...I don't think we still have the Knights Templar, from what I've read, but, um, I don't really get out all that much. I don't know what the Circle is, though, or if we have that."

"If you haven't heard of it, there probably isn't one," Anders said hopefully. "They're places for mages to live. For our own protection, allegedly. And I don't know what Crusades you mean."

He ran a hand through his hair. "This is all rather confusing, isn't it?"

"No more than anything else I've run into today," Rapunzel said with a little smile. "Mage, huh? So you...do magic?"

She was going to feel really dumb if that word meant something other than what she'd read in books.

"I do magic," Anders agreed, wryly amused. "I've been training since I was 12, so you don't have to worry about me accidentally turning things into frogs or anything. What about you, any special skills?"

"Just a whole lot of hair," Rapunzel said, trying not to let the lie show on her face. "So, you know, if you ever feel like not taking the stairs, I've got an easy way in and out of the room."

It was a joke, but that had been the primary mode of entrance and exit to her tower.

Anders winced. "Wouldn't that hurt you?"

He wasn't a small man, and Rapunzel's hair seemed rather firmly attached to her head.

"I'm kinda used to it," Rapunzel assured him, tugging on her hair from shoulder length. "I -- it wouldn't be my first time. I mean, you don't go around with this much hair without using it, you know?"

"I don't know, but I believe you," Anders said, with a small smile. "So if there's ever a fire, I shouldn't feel guilty about using your hair to get out."
