Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!

"I thought you'd be warning me more about what teachers to avoid," Kira said. "But I can be open minded. I thought I was going to be bored all summer in some stuffy place with uniforms or something."

"Haven't really met any teachers that I'd really recommend you stay away from," Flick said, filling that one in for her easily enough. "But I can confirm this place isn't stuffy and the only uniform I've seen comes from the occasional cop or fast food jockey. You won't be bored and if you ever are, I'm sure I can help you fix that."

See, there was some flirting for you, Kira. Guess he wasn't gonna leave you high and dry!

Kira's whole face turned a little red, so good job there Flick. "It would be nice to have at least one person to talk to sometimes," she said. "Have you been here for a while?" Asking about him was polite, as far as she knew.

"Longer than I expected," he answered vaguely. "I'm from New York originally so it's not that far away if I wanna take a trip home."

Those tended not to end well, though.

"It's not a bad place to spend time. Lots of stuff to do even if the island seems tiny."

"I'm from New York too!" Aww Flick, it was like destiny! "I mean, that's really cool, especially since I've talked to people who didn't even know that was a place. It seems like the island will take a while to explore, with all the stairs."

Someday, she might know how to flirt with a boy, but it wouldn't be today.

"You get used to the stairs," he said idly. "And hey, always good to have another New Yorker around. There are a few of us here so you're not alone. Greatest place in the world."

Bad experiences or not, he'd always think that. "You looking for anything specific here? I can point out a few places unless you'd rather find them on your own."

See, he was totally helpful! It helped that she was cute.

Kira thought for a moment. "Places to find coffee, and whatever passes for pizza here," she said. "And a suggestion for what people do on the weekends when there isn't something like this going on?"

"The Perk and JGOB for the first two," he said, counting off on his fingers. " Pizza Planet for the pizza. Things to do? Caritas, the beach, the arcade in town and you can usually find people in the common rooms too, watching television or sharing food."
