Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Not sure what to make of the sad expression, Ichabod said: "I'm afraid it's not a place I have ever heard of. I am from Oxford, myself."

"I'm afraid I've also never heard of it," Andros admitted. "KO-35 is a colony world, in the Karova system," he explained, completely unaware that wasn't very helpful.

This was confusing. The words 'world' and 'system' meant little to Ichabod in that context, and would never had expected anyone not to have heard of Oxford.

"Unfortunately that means very little to me."

Andros suddenly remembered that he was on Earth now, and they were sort of...behind. "It's another planet?" he tried.

"Planet?"

Of course he knew what a planet was, but they were not places you could 'be from'.

"Yep," Andros confirmed, nodding, because of course they were places you could be from! Of course, in his universe the moon had atmosphere. And horses. "So, is Oxford near here?" Wherever 'here' was. His grasp on the geography wasn't good, but it seemed a polite sort of question.

"Where I come from 'planets' are celestial bodies in orbit around the sun, similar to Earth," Ichabod replied. "They are not places I would expect anyone to call home. And Oxford is about a days journey from here, by coach and by ship."

"That's what a planet is," Andros confirmed. "Some of them have people living on them." Not...his at the moment, but that was neither here nor there. "I'm going to guess you don't mean 'spaceship' when you say 'ship,' so what do you mean?"

"Space ship? What is a space ship? And by ship I mean a vessel made of wood and sails which carry passengers across water by the force of the wind."

Had it not been for previous encounters this day he would have drawn the conclusion that Andros was insane. Now he was increasingly worrying about his own sanity.

This planet was worse than he'd feared. Sails? They were using sails? Even the 'shuttle bus' had used a combustion engine. "It's a ship made out of metal. That travels through space." Duh. "I could show you mine sometime, if you want," he offered.

"I... guess I should very much like to see that," Ichabod said, a hint of sarcasm in his voice, as if he wasn't quite prepared to believe in the existence of 'space ships'.

"I'll take you up there sometime," Andros promised. Prepare to have your mind blown, Ichabod. "So...I don't know, do you have any weird habits I should know about?"

"None that people have been kind enough to inform me about," Ichabod replied with a smile. "And yourself?"

"Insomnia, sometimes, and nightmares," Andros admitted. "I'll do my best not to bother you, though. Anything else, believe me, Zh--someone would have told me about." Pay no attention to that verbal stumble, Ichabod.

Of course Ichabod paid attention to the verbal stumble, but it was none of his business.

"I believe that is more of a burden for you than it will be for me."

"You might not think so at three in the morning," Andros said ruefully. "I apologize in advance."
