Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Ichabod hesitated a moment before both shaking Alana's hand and replying:

"I was under the impression that we are in England," he replied, because he couldn't have travelled that far on the ship.

However, he knew of no place in England where young women shook hands with young men.

Alana shook her head. "Nope, sorry. This is Fandom Island, which is off the coast of Maryland, which is in North America, which is on a planet called Earth. But don't worry too much. It's this weird nexus thing, so we get people from all over."

"North America? Are you trying to tell me I've crossed the Atlantic in less than a day?!"

Please, he wasn't an idiot, and did not like to be treated as one.

"... yeah?" Alana said slowly. "It's not that far. People cross it in planes all the time."

"It takes weeks on a ship," he pointed out.

He may look a little lost, but he would not be made a fool of.

"Like, a boat?" Alana answered, puzzled. "Well, sure, but why would anyone take one of those?"

"There is another way?" Ichabod asked. He was confused, as Alana seemed sincere in her question.

"I'm not an expert or anything, but I think most people fly in planes," Alana said. She was also confused.

"Let's back up. Where were you trying to get?"

"I was under the impression that this island was off the west coast of England," he explained. "And the journey here took the time expected for that distance. And I'm not familiar with the word 'planes'."

"Okay, a plane is like a ship that flies," Alana explained. "Look at the sky long enough and you'll see one, which is probably better than me explaining it. But -- I'm sorry -- you are a pretty long way from England. If it helps, I didn't think I was coming quite this far either and I like it fine."
