Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"That's correct!" Isabelle confirmed, tapping her fingertips against the nametag in question as if for further proof. "And you must be Kaylin! Hello, welcome to Fandom."

"Hello," Kaylin said, feeling suddenly more than a little homesick. Something about Isabelle reminded her of Teela, not that she could quite put her finger on it.

"So, how bad is this place?" she asked. "I'd never even heard of it till yesterday when they told me I had to come."

"It's completely insane." Isabelle. Do try to be a little more reassuring. "But you'll never be bored. And it's not that bad. People are nice, classes are easy, the island... keeps things interesting."

"Completely insane? Great." Kaylin sighed. "I'll never be a Hawk at this rate. Boring is underrated, you know. Especially when you're trying to stay out of trouble."

And then her brain caught up to what her eyes had been seeing and she went completely still. "Those marks."

Not here. Oh gods, not here too.

"How many have died? Are they doing something to protect you?"

Isabelle's eyebrows went up with surprise at this change in the conversation, then down again with confusion.

"Died?" she asked. "As far as I know, no one's died. We've come pretty close a few times, but the danger never lasts very long. It's always been handled."

"The marks," Kaylin said again, pointing to the ones on Isabelle's hand and her arm.

She hesitated, then made a quick decision, first checking to make sure no one was around before rolling up part of her sleeve to uncover the runes there. "They aren't exactly the same, but back home... when these appeared on someone they died."

Okay, more eyebrow-raising, then. Isabelle leaned in to give Kaylin's runes a curious look, though.

"Well, I can assure you mine did not just appear, even if you could say they do tend to predict a shorter than avergae lifespan," she said, as she did. "But I notice you don't seem to be dead, either."

"Yeah," Kaylin said quietly. "Nobody knows why either. The killings just stopped. I fled and, well... they stopped."

She pulled her sleeve down, once again glancing around to make sure no one saw. "If yours didn't just appear, how did you get them?"

"Drew them on myself," Isabelle replied easily, even if she was eyeing the other girl with some lingering curiosity. The fact that she could see the Marks already set her apart from being just any old mundie, and Isabelle was already suspecting she wasn't one at all. "Well, technically it's more like burning. Also I didn't draw all of them. Sometimes I get help."

Places like the upper arms were tricky to get done yourself.

"You burned yourself to put them on?" Kaylin's eyes were huge. "Why? What do they do?"

"Everything," Isabelle shrugged. "Heighten my senses, make me faster and stronger, that kind of thing. They give me a boost." She shrugged again. "My people have been doing it for centuries. So I'm fairly confident it's not the same thing as your markings."

Although, again, Shadowhunters did not have a very long life expectancy.

"These give me.. Well, I can do things with them. Healing and... Stuff."

Like flaying a man alive, but she wasn't about to mention that.

"Well, that's good," Isabelle replied with a nod. "At least it's not all killings with nothing good attached." There were probably better ways of stating that but Isabelle was not always the most tactful. "In any case, Fandom tends to be a pretty safe place, in that regard. Weird things like that don't seem to follow people here, as far as I can tell."

Lack of tact would definitely turn out to be something they had in common.

"I suppose," Kaylin agreed. "I... can't always control it, though. That's why I wear this." She showed her the golden jeweled bracer she wore on her left arm - also pretty much always covered by her sleeve. "It stops me from doing anything."

"Huh." That was a very eloquent response. "I've never seen anything like that."

Well, nothing with that purpose. There was a ruby hanging around her neck that could tell when demons were near, so she was well acquainted with jewelry that had mystical properties.

"Its very old. No one even really knows how it works, just that it does," Kaylin admitted.

Isabelle nodded again, with a general critical look at the other girl, like she was assessing the situation.

"I think at this point I should ask you where you're from."

"Elantra," Kaylin said firmly. "Though I grew up in the fief of Nightshade."

She wasn't even mentioning Barren. She wasn't even going to think about Barren.

"I've never heard of either," Isabelle replied, and didn't seem surprised by that. This was Fandom, after all. "I'm from New York."

She was doubting that was going to yield recognition, either.

Kaylin shook her head. "No, I have never heard of that. I'm beginning to believe that people here are actually from different worlds."

"Different worlds, different times," Isabelle confirmed with a little nod. "I know someone who's also from New York and the same time period as me, but his New York is still different."

Or at least she hadn't found any traces of the Shadow World over there when she'd visited – and she would have seen it if there'd been anything to see.

"You get used to it after a while."

"I suppose you can get used to anything if you have enough time," Kaylin said. "But there's an awful lot to get used to here."
