Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2014, Early Saturday Evening [Part 2]

As the last new graduate sat down with their diploma, the plants around the stage began quietly rustling.

Mega-Gro - the new company that had been hired to take care of the grounds - had guaranteed that their landscaping would be the brightest, and more importantly the biggest, that anyone had ever seen, and they were not mistaken in their claim. Out of the flowers, the creatures that had been living in the foliage began to grow, and the ceramic gnomes that had been scattered throughout the plants as decorations began to grow too. Then, after not too long, they began to blink, and move.

Somewhere, Tiny was either doing a fist-pump of righteousness, or having a heart attack.

There wasn't much time before the gnomes grew to human size, and began moving towards each other to group up. True to Fandom graduation protocols, an invisible, impenetrable dome came down to separate the graduates from the rest of the audience, as giant crickets, toads, slugs, ladybugs, and other creatures poured out from between the plants.

"All winter long, we were left to weather the snow and ice and chill, while the humans stayed warm inside their homes!" one of the gnomes cried. "Now, we will be abandoned to the elements no more! Gentlemen, attack!"

Sparkle hadn't brought popcorn, no. But he did bring a flask, which he was pulling out just for this occasion. He raised it up in a toast as the bugs and such readied to attack, and then took a swig.

A drink and a show. This was the best way to spend an evening.

Well, that was unexpected.

Not that the surprise stopped her from instinctively sending a water whip towards the nearest bug, only to have it splash uselessly against the dome.

"It seems Korra and her classmates may have to handle this on their own."

Mako only barely kept himself from uselessly sending a burst of flame following after Katara's waterwhip. "But we have to try to help!"

James was immediately standing up and waving around some cash. "Okay, taking bets! Who crushes the most gnomes? Who squishes the most bugs? Who's the first graduate casualty? Bets start at $100 for picks, $20 for props. Gnomes escaping unbroken, over under is 2.5! Bug limbs detached from bodies is at 17.5!"

Bo wasn't sure why she even wore her SECURITY tee to these things. In three years, she had yet to be able to do anything to help besides...

"Eh, maybe it calms down the parents?"

Or at least gave them something to stare at if they wanted a distraction from watching their kids fight off an army of giant bugs.

James wasn't a parent as far as he knew, but he would take a break from trying to play bookie to stare anyway.

Jack stiffened, blue light flashing around her -- and then dying down once she realized there was absolutely nothing she could do except pace anxiously and glare at the gnomes. So she was doing a lot of both.

Zoe was just going to quietly facepalm, and wait to see what happened. She both hated and had resigned feelings about this day.

At the back of the stage, a box appeared containing hammers, bug spray, and giant cannisters of salt. Hopefully, some of you also thought to arm yourselves, just in case!

"I can't believe I got this far in school and this is what does it," Jessica sighed. The way she fired a web at a gnome to yank it towards her was more annoyed than anything. Seriously, gnomes?

Anna had been expecting something like this, yes. She very carefully took off her robe, hat, and shoes, and placed them, along with her diploma, on her chair. And then she changed. Her skin went grey and ashen, her eyes filled with dirty water, and her white dress was soaked red, the blood spilling down her legs. Anna Dressed in Blood was in the building, and somewhere inside her Anna Korlov hoped she wasn't about to scar anyone's relatives for life by having to rip a giant frog in half or anything.

This ... wasn't precisely unexpected, given it was Fandom. Victor went into fight mode, electrocuting one bug after another to take down as many as he could manage.

"New code name," he decided. "The Bug Zapper."

If fighting wasn't your thing, there was a safe spot behind all of the chairs to huddle and avoid the wrath of the gnomes.

Seriously, it wasn't like anyone in Fandom made winter last forever, right?

After the last of the gnomes had been smashed, the school's sprinkler system kicked in, washing Mega-Gro's soil off of any remaining pests and shrinking them back down to their normal size.

If any graduates got wet in the process, hey, it was a small price to pay for surviving graduation, right?

Finally, the invisible barrier lifted, and everyone was released. Hurray!
