Library, Thursday.

Look, the island was throwing up weirder-than-usual-shite lately, which meant John was out of his office, flipping through a book from Special Collections and occasionally glaring at the history section.

The reason for the glaring? A tall, pale man in black robes, with wild black hair and stars in his eyes. Who seemed to be absorbed in his own reading and totally unaware of Constantine. Then again, one never knew with this one.

"Bloody buggering ponce," he grumbled under his breath. "Oi, your worship! I didn't stand in any bloody gallery, didn't hold any moronic symbol, and I sure as hell am not doing any more jobs for you! Get your Endless ass out of my library!"

The silent figure - and long-ago librarian of Fandom High - gave no indication he even knew John was there, and went about his business.

Fucking island.

Don't mind the emo man in black. Actually, stay away from the emo man in black. You'll make Constantine much happier if you stay away from any and all extremely pale people dressed in black. If you need something out of history, please wait until he moves on or does whatever he's going to do and leaves.

Endless had no business being on an island full of mortals. None.

Nope, Isabelle hadn't been here since the last time things had been particularly weird. And she wasn't really here for the weirdness right now, either.

So of course she ended up eyeing that one extremely pale, kind of Silent Brother-y looking person a bit warily. Before turning to Constantine for information, because he was the closest thing to Hodge they had around here. "Who's that?"

"A fucking pain in my ass who shouldn't be here," Constantine said, leveling a glare at the intruder. "If we're lucky, he'll leave before falling in love with a student and doing something monumentally stupid."

Because Morpheus was not known for Good Decisions, okay? Ever.

"Give 'em a wide berth if you can. He's Endless, and I'd rather not have him meddling around us mortals if I can help it."

So, not a Silent Brother, then.

"Only half of that made sense to me." The important parts, though, so it didn't really matter. "But, noted. I'll try to contain my curiosity."

"Immortal-ish anthropomorphic manifestations of natural forces. Were around when this universe began and they'll be the last ones out when it ends," he said, nodding at the robed figure. "That one's Dream. No idea if the other six are around here, but I haven't seen them yet."

"Huh."

Yeah, the girl with the runes and the scars wasn't going to go overboard with her reaction to this revelation. Although she did raise her eyebrows.

"I would've expected him to look more imposing than that, then. Interesting."

"Oh, trust me. He can be bloody terrifying when he wants to be, no matter what shape he's wearing. This is just his current favorite form when dealing with us humans. There's damn few things in Creation older than him." Constantine gave him the stink-eye again. "Problem is, he's a trouble-magnet."

"You got anything similar where you're from?"

"Well, the angels." She shrugged. "But they don't do hands-on meddling, so no one's seen any of them in a long time."

Oh, Izzy, just wait until summer.

"We do have our own brand of creepy librarians, though," she added after another glance. "But they're human. Sort of."

"They don't meddle, or you just don't catch them?" he asked dryly. "'Semi-Human Creepy Librarians' would be a good name for a punk band, tho."

"I don't know what that is."

She wasn't great at naming genres of music or the related movements. It was a travesty, really.

"As for the angels, they help us, they just don't show up to do it in person."

"You don't know punk?" Constantine looked appalled. "Kids these days. Go on down to Groovy Tunes, and ask the bloke that works there to hook you up."

"As for the angels, be glad you haven't met one. All the ones I've dealt with were pompous twits," he said, disgusted. "They need to respect the fact that we got free will, and they aren't in charge anymore."

"Pretty sure your angels are not the same as ours."

But, you know. It was kind of hard to be unbiased when you were part angel yourself.

A fuzzy blue monster came into the library, glanced around and approached Constantine. "Excuse me. Do you know what the Letter of the Day is?"

Someone had to know, right?

What the bleeding fuck? He didn't seem like a demon, but he hadn't seen any memos about blue furry students lately.

Constantine squinted at the little blue fellow. "'S far as I know, there's no letter of the day, but you can have tea if you want." Sometimes, John thought he was ~~punny~~ funny.

"Don't think I've seen you around before, sunshine. You a student?"

"Yes and no," Grover said. "I am a student, but not here? The island moves, which does not seem geologically sound."

"Mate, there's a lot about this island that isn't sound."

Understatement.

"I am discovering that," Grover said, nodding vehemently. "No Letter of the Day, I have not seen a Roman Centurion since I got here...the electricity is a nice change, though. Ancient Rome does not have electricity!"

"Hey," Joker said as he walked in, "you look like you might actually be in charge of this place. Are you? 'Cause... we all could use a little mystic librarian mojo, right about now."

"I've got the mojo, but answers are a bit tricker," Constantine said, glancing up from his book. "Haven't found any yet, but we're starting to get more people coming in to poke at the questions as they realize the shit is well and truly fucked around here."

If you're a clever person who has actually figured out the place has gone more batshit than usual, here's the thread for you!

It wasn't that Elizabeth was shy - even the naive edges had been taken from her during her few months in Roman Fandom. But she was used to libraries and using them to pursue knowledge; it wasn't strange for her to gravitate towards this one after three confusing days adrift.

She was there first thing, before anyone else, darting from one shelf to the other. Surely there had to be something specific to this situation she could use?

It wasn't that Cosette was concerned about the sheer confluence of (more than usual) strangeness on the island so much as -- well, no, that was wrong. She was concerned, but years of living with the Thénardiers had taught her to make herself useful to ensure her own survival . . . and to do a thorough job of concealing any signs of vulnerability.

So despite her nonchalant demeanor she was in the library with a purpose -- at Éponine's rather insistent suggestion, granted. ("They'll look at you less funny if it's you," she'd said, "seeing as you're the one who's got lessons, and I'd only stick out more, and you know that won't do. I'll have a look about town in the meantime.")

They'd both been brought up to look after themselves first and foremost, not go out of their way to help other people, but, well. The elder Thénardiers -- neither her version of them nor Éponine's -- weren't here, were they? And one could argue that it would be in their own best interests anyway . . .

"Hi."

Elizabeth ducked her head. "I hope I'm not disturbing you," she added. "You just... look like you've got some purpose; I was wondering if yours and mine might align."

"It's possible, but it always is, in some way, isn't that true?" allowed Cosette, cautious as always; she might be willing to trust people, but it was always wise to make sure first. "It is the library, after all. One'd imagine we've all come to read something or other, unless it's a quiet spot to sleep one's after."

She returned the smile, though, with a touch more reservation than the ordinary Cosette might.

"Sure," Elizabeth said cautiously. "But... there's something funny going on, isn't there?"

She sucked in a breath. "I just-- would like not to be the only one who's trying to figure this out. If you know what I'm talking about at all, which you might not... come to think of it."

"Well, now you mention it, I don't think I've seen you around before," Cosette answered. "Or were you someone that I have seen, only you aren't any more? People are behaving awfully strangely from one day to the next, it seems."

Joker settled back in at the same table as yesterday, collected a new pile of books to look through, and got to work.
