Sexual Health ; Thursday

When the class arrived, Mindy was sitting on the desk at the front of the room, looking chipper.

"Hello," she greeted them. "Today's a fun day. We're learning about urinary tract infections."

Mindy had a unique grasp on what constituted fun.

Erica Everywoman was making a reappearance on Mindy's left hand today. She yelped, "It hurts when I pee!"

"That's okay, Erica," Mindy replied to the puppet. "We're going to fix you right up."

She beamed at the class.

"A urinary tract infection is an anomaly in your urinary tract, which is the system that produces urine and carries it out of your body," Mindy began brightly. "Both men and women can get these, so sorry, kiddo, you're not exempt from this one." She nodded to Jackson, the sole boy in the class. "There are two types of these: Bladder infections and kidney infections."

"Comparatively, bladder infections are the less worrisome of the two," Mindy began. She had beside her two plastic model of human reproductive systems, one male and one female, and she picked the female model up now, waving it in front of the class. "I'm going to explain this one using our stuff, ladies. So, sometimes bacteria get into your body through your urethra," she said, pointing to it. "This can happen after sex, or whenever your hormones are being weird, like during pregnancy, after using spermicide, or basically any other time, because these things are super common. Anyway, the urethra is this two-inch tube that goes toward the bladder," she traced it on the model, "so eventually the bacteria winds up there, which leads to having to pee a lot, experiencing a burning sensation when you pee, passing weirdly small amounts of urine, and all that gross stuff."

"It's important to see a doctor right away if you get one of these, because they're usually treated with antibiotics and there's stuff to know about self-treating, like drinking lots of fluids, et cetera. They can also progress into kidney infections, which are way worse, and occur when the bacteria travel from the bladder all the way to the kidneys." She showed the progression on the plastic model. "That comes with fevers and nausea and vomiting, which are obviously unpleasant symptoms, and if a kidney infection doesn't get treated in a timely manner, generally with oral antibiotics, you can actually wind up damaging your kidneys permanently."

She shrugged. "Not so fun. So, now that you know all this, I'd like you to pair up and make informational brochures about what we've learned. There are crayons, colored pencils and markers up here, and feel free to use your phones to research anything you're not sure about."
