There were bowls of pre-made sugar cookie dough (not from a tube, no), a selection of heart shaped cookie cutters, and a lovely assortment of frostings at the front of the class this afternoon. Because it was Valentine's week.

Fear for your lives.

Pinkie didn't know what this whole "Valentine's" business was? (Yes, she'd been here for years, but you didn't REALLY think she was paying that close attention, did you?) But it was also very close to Hearts and Hooves Day, and that had her very excited.

"Hellohellohello!" she greeted at the top of the class. "Raise your hoof -- uh, hand? Humans have hands right? -- if you have a very special somepony! -- er, very special somehuman!"

"You don't have to raise your hands," Derek added, helpfully. He dumped supplies on desks like a good little assistant. At least he wasn't wearing a 'Kiss the Cook' apron, okay?

Yet, honey. He's not wearing a 'Kiss the Cook' apron yet.

Pinkie pouted. "But I wanna know who has a very special somepony!" Yes. She was in fact whining.

Derek rolled his eyes. "It's private." Like his apron wearing!

Pinkie sighed. "You're just sad 'cause you don't have a very special somepony right now," she decided. "Oh! You're forgetting your apron!" She tossed it at his face.

Goddamnit, Pinkie.

That got a huff of extreme annoyance that always happened in this special classroom before the apron was put on without reading the text on it. With a lot more anger than strictly necessary, but. What can you do? "Today we're doing sugar cookies. You can give them out or eat them yourself."

"Or both!" Pinkie said. She had frosting all over her mouth. When did this happen?

It was probably best not to know.

Derek sighed again. "Or both. Get to work."

Victor snorted lightly. "Maybe. A distraction like what?"

He wasn't doubting Isabel's advice, but the island in February was not exactly overflowing with exciting new activities.

"A distraction like a new girl."

Isabelle said this as if it was obvious. Because to her, it was.

"Got somebody in mind?" Victor asked. "I mean, it's not like I'm opposed, but I haven't met anybody lately where there's the right vibe."

Then again, he hadn't been looking all that hard -- unless he counted the Homecoming date with Jessica, which seemed to be a one-off.

"Really?" Isabelle asked, raising both eyebrows. "Have you seen this island? I think I might actually have to accept that some of the girls around here are as pretty as me."

That was mostly playful. She had a huge ego, but not that huge.

Victor raised an eyebrow right back. "You don't think there's a difference between thinking somebody is pretty, and feeling like there's relationship potential?"

Note that he didn't argue abut her being pretty. That would just be ridiculous.

Isabelle snorted. "Who said anything about a relationship? I just said you needed a distraction."

She wasn't really a relationship kind of person.

Victor looked mildly surprised like the good Catholic mama's boy he was, but then laughed.

"Maybe. I never know how to set that kind of thing up."

That was kind of adorable. You know, to a serial dater.

"Well in my experience," Isabelle replied, amused, "it's about as easy as asking someone out for a date."

"Okay, you're doing that 'using logic' thing."

Not that Isabel was wrong. Like, at all.

"Yeah, it usually works for most situations." She was ever so smart like that. "And I mean, you don't think all your dates are supposed to lead to relationships, do you? Because if you do, we can never go out together."

"No, I can have a date that's just a date," Victor said defensively. (In fact, exactly none of his relationships had started with a date-date. So the link was a little bit silly.)

And then the rest of what she said registered and he eyed her curiously. "Did you want to go out with me sometime?"

Isabelle shrugged a shoulder, and smiled. Almost playfully. "Maybe. Are you asking me out?"

Honestly, she wanted to go out with most boys she came across here. It was an easy way to find out if they were any fun!

Victor rubbed his fingers across his forehead, about to laugh again out of surprise. He decided to go for it -- Isabelle was right, he was never going to get less single if he didn't ask people out. And there were definitely way worse things he could do than spend a couple hours with a cool, pretty girl.

"I guess I am," he said. "You doing anything Sunday night?"

The next few days were packed with Valentine's Day, the dance and his birthday, all of which seemed like unfortunate timing for a casual date.

Isabelle smirked at him. "As a matter of fact, I'm not." That she knew of. Fandom and alternative universes were going to have other ideas related to child-minding. "I'm perfectly free."

Alternate universes sucked that way.

"Then I guess we have a date," Victor said, and resisted the urge to pump his fist. "Are you a vegetarian or anything weird like that?"

"I'm weird by a lot of standards," Isabelle quipped. She meant mundane standards, mostly. For her own culture, she was pretty normal. "But that's not one of them. No dietary restrictions."

"Yeah, I've noticed weird runs in your family," Victor joked. "But cool. Nothing kills a night out like watching somebody who doesn't eat meat be sad at Mooby's."

He was not going to take her to Mooby's. Probably.

Isabelle's head tilted to the side. "Mooby's is the fast food place, right?" she checked. Then she shook her head. "Don't take me to the fast food place."
