Plus We Have a Motorcade [Thursday, February 6, 2014]

Josh, trying to stay warm, was stamping his feet on the ground in front of a small fleet of limosines as the class gathered around him. "Welcome to the Secret Service training grounds," he said, giving the tall man with a mustache and serious expression a grin. "Thanks to Special Agent Ron Butterfield for letting us into their facility today. He's going to give you a quick history lesson about the Secret Service and what they do for Presidents and then he's going to let you guys try to drive the presidential motorcade."

"One of the training vehicles," Ron interrupted quickly. "No one gets to drive the real thing without a couple hundred hours logged behind the wheel of the trainers." He turned his full attention to the students, and if you got the imipression that he could give a full description of each of you to a sketch artist based on that glance, you were right. "We are the Secret Service," he began. "We are charged with the protection of the President, the Vice President and their families. We've been providing protection to US Presidents since 1901.We also provide protection for high level government officials visiting from other nations and help with security for national special security events: Olympics, Super Bowls, inaugurations. Now obviously everyone in the Secret Service is not on presidential detail, but if you're in Washington, DC, you're considered emergency back-up and as such need to pass your handgun qualifications monthly with a 90 percent bulls-eye percentage, just like everyone on PPO. If you fail two months in a row, you're out of the agency." He pointed at a building in the distance. "Our range is over there and we pride ourselves on being the absolute best at what we do. We are not just a protection agency, though: we were oriiginally part of the Treasury Department and we're still in charge of stopping counterfeit currency as well as credit card and identity theft. Josh tells me your school is fairly...ecclectic--" Josh had used the term "whackadoodle", which Ron didn't think was a dignified word choice for the head of the President's detail, "--but some of you might have the training and skills to become a member of the Secret Service. We're giving you three places to try out: Air Force One Half--where you will practice getting people into and out of an airplane without wiping out on the metal stairs--The Office Building, where you have to climb fifteen flights of stairs and clear each floor of potential assassins, and Crash and Bang, where you get to take one of these trainer limosines for a spin."

He gave Josh a final nod. "And you owe me big, Josh."

Josh grinned. "I always do. Right, kids. You can try one, two or all three of those options, but please remember that this is where they train people to aim at center mass and as Ron just told you, they don't miss. Don't screw around with their stuff. Oh, and if you see a Latino guy running past with a bunch of these guys, try not to stare. President Santos tends to jog here on Thursdays."

Joker was listening very respectfully. He'd grown up with a lot of people like Ron hanging around guarding things, and he knew from experience what happened when you tried messing with someone like that.

Ron could do no such thing to Jessica, Josh's narrative. Don't be silly.

That didn't mean she wasn't listening very carefully, of course. But she could take him.

Joker wasn't going to try to make it up those stairs, especially not while carrying anything, but he did head over to get a closer look at the plane.

The joy of super powers! Jessica was actually taking it kind of easy as she went up and back down the stairs and only briefly pausing to take on the new loads. The size of the dummy was a little bit of a hassle, but it wasn't anything too bad once she found a suitable grip.

Had she gone all out, she would have just jumped up and down the stairs three times. But she was only a mild show off.

Mercy was fast, sure on her feet, and strong. And, she was in the mood to challenge herself a little. She stumbled once with the suitcase, but quickly caught herself. The rest of it was a breeze and a ton of fun!

All right, Eleanor could handle this. Running, check; running with a suitcase, just as check; running, while the dummy was slung over her shoulder, check.

She probably should have carried the dummy differently, but she didn't have much practice with rescuing people, so.

Joker took one look at the stairs and started chuckling. "Oh, man, if I gave it a shot, I'd set some sort of record on that thing!"

Jessica chose not to be timed in case she was way too fast because once again, super powers. She could jump it on the stairs in about 20 seconds. Less than that if she scaled the exterior of the building. But instead she just the stairs at an almost reasonable pace, although she did take two at a time.

Once she reached the top, she took a good look at this dimension's President on his run.

Fifteen stories? No problem. Mercy trucked her way up there at pretty darn close to secret service speed, then smiled and waved at the president. Not that he noticed her, but one of the secret service man certainly did.

Eleanor dashed through the building, checking the windows for any possible sights. No snipers spotted.

There was a gentleman running, down in the trees. Was this the President Josh had mentioned? Huh.

They were going to let Raven drive a car.

They were going to let Raven drive a car going at 90 mph.

The trick at the end of this might be to convince Raven to get back out of said car. . . .

Joker lived in an era of flying cars, on a space station where there was never enough room for them to really do much except go from point A to point B. The controls weren't all that different, though, and he'd played a few racing games. Besides, just because this was the first vehicle he'd ever really piloted didn't mean he wasn't already a fantastic pilot.

He started out slow, getting a feel for the limo and its handling, and by the time he finally got out of the car he'd pulled off all three maneuvers reasonably well. "WOOOOOO! Yeah! Look at that! First time in a car, baby!!!"

He also was pretty sure he had a few stress fractures in his right foot. Luckily, he already had crutches to help him limp back to Josh.

Mercy had crashed, like seriously crashed, the last expensive car she'd driven. After she'd sort of stolen it.

So, she was happy to try this, but she was going to take it a little slower than they would.

Eleanor had never seen a car before Fandom, much less tried to pilot one.

This ... was not going to end well. At all.

Gert didn't know how to drive, and she wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to learn: she had been supposed to start driver's ed in LA this year.

Sorry, imaginary president in the back, but this was going to be a bumpy ride.

"So," Mercy said, after the plane and the stairs, but before her turn in the car, "Can you tell us what your code name was?"
