Plus We Have a Motorcade [Thursday, January 9, 2014, 1st period]

Josh wasn't in the classroom when it was time to begin. It wasn't because it was the first class of the day, either--he'd been up since 6 because he was a weirdo that way. No, he wanted to make an impression.

He'd called in a few favors (okay, a lot of favors) and instead of Josh entering the room, two Marine sentries came in, immaculately dressed in their dress uniforms, and stood at attention. They were immediately followed by five men in suits and serious expressions with very obvious earpieces in their ears. They glanced at each student, assessing them for danger, and then spread out around the room.

Finally, a familiar fanfare (at least if you were American) began playing and Josh strode into the room, waving like he was expecting to greet hundreds of onlookers. He then proceeded to walk around and shake the hands of each student individually, pausing to learn each of their names, before heading to his desk.

The Marines and Secret Service agents left.

"Wasn't that great?" Josh asked bouncily. "I've always wanted to do that. Anyway, I'm Josh Lyman, this is a class on the presidency and if you're in the wrong place, stand up so we can all make fun of you."

He wasn't really expecting anyone to do that.

"The presidency, or executive branch if you want to get fancy about it, is one of three alledgedly equal branches of the US federal government," he said. "But it's also the only one with its own theme music so that makes it better than everyone else. We'll get into the details about how much better it is later in the year, and we'll get some special guests if I can swing it, but for now, let's do the introduction thing so I can immediately forget all of your names again. I'll start. I'm Josh Lyman. I was the deputy chief of staff during most of the Bartlet administration, then became CoS for the first part of the Santos administration before coming here to mold you young people into not being complete idiots. My favorite president, other than the ones I worked for, is Thomas Jefferson, and if I could have a theme song, I'd pick meta for Shaft because that's some great music."

He pointed at some poor student. "Now you. Name, grade if you haven't been a chief of staff for a president, favorite president or leader of whatever dimension you come from, and what you'd pick if someone played theme music before you walked into a room."

He leaned back against his desk. "And I need an assistant for this class if anyone's interested. I might find you some theme music too."

Joker rolled his eyes at the spectacle, but was kind of intrigued by the Marines' antique uniforms.

Well, that was definitely a way to start a class. Jessica didn't try to mess with any of the guests because she knew the drill. She'd had to do some of this stuff herself. No need to make their day even more ridiculous than Josh had.

Raven was honestly quite impressed.

And, well, she couldn't help but notice that that was a lot of people to potentially mimic.

So this was what the motorcade class was about? Government? This had to be some sort of mistake.

This was absolutely awesome! If Mercy hadn't been excited about being in the class before, she sure would be now.

"Gert Yorkes," Gert said. "Again. Junior year, FDR, and I don't know my theme song yet. Plus I'm gonna opt not to seem comically out of date by answering with something popular from 2003, where I'm from."

"My name is Loki, son of Laufey. I am a junior." Who still looked tiny. "Need it be a president? Might I say my brother instead? Not the one here as he is still young," he amended.

"Jeff Moreau. I normally go by 'Joker', but not in front of visiting dignitaries. I'm a Junior, my favorite president was John F. Kennedy, and my personal theme song is..." He thought for a moment, trying to figure out his favorite song, and then frowned. "You know what? If this is really the past, I should go with that. 'Danger Zone', by what's-his-name. From that movie."

"I'm Jessica Drew, a senior," Jessica said. "And my favorite President from my world is Captain America. He's a superhero who fought in World War II, was frozen in ice for a few decades, and recently won an emergency election as a write-in candidate when we were in the middle of a civil war. And as soon as he punched enough people to keep the country together, he resigned because he knew he wouldn't be the right leader for reconstruction."

"I don't agree with all of his politics, but I can't argue about his policy of punching people. Anyway, I think I'd like some clown music. What's that called, calliope? Just to show that it's time to get serious."

"I'm Raven Darkholme," Raven said. "I'm a sophomore, and, uh. I guess . . . I like Ike?" (She would discover later that she actually preferred Teddy Roosevelt, but she was fifteen and not terribly good at political history, just yet.) "As for theme songs, I've never really thought about it, but I'd probably go with something by Rosemary Clooney."

She could actually get more fifties, but it would take some effort.

Eleanor had hoped to somehow blend into the crowd and not be called upon. Fat chance.

"My name is Eleanor Lamb, and I'm a sophomore," she said. "I've ... never had a president, or any sort of government, really. We've only had two leaders, and they were ideologically complete opposites, but they were equally corrupt and detestable, so I don't admire either of them."

Especially not her mother.

"I don't have a theme song, but I'm fond of old jazz," she added. "Grace Holloway used to sing for me, if you've heard of her."

She had been famous in St. Louis in the 1920s and 30s, but she didn't expect many of them were experts on blues singers from nearly one hundred years in the past.

"Mercy Thompson. I'm a senior and as for a leader, well... if we're talking president, maybe JFK?" Mercy said. "But if we're just talking amazing leader, I'd have to go with Bran Cornick. Though, you might not believe me if I told you who he's the leader of. As for a theme song, I don't know, I never thought about that, maybe... Eye of the Tiger? Just 'cause I like it."

Gert's arms were crossed but her expression was tentatively hopeful as she approached Josh.

"Hey," she greeted him. "I know an okay amount about politics, and I've been in your classes a bunch of times now, so I guess if you're still in need of a coffee slave, I could be helpful."
