Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the ~~moddable~~ warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Joker nodded. "Seriously," he agreed. "The people I was in the spaceport with didn't know was a ME field was!"

"Many of the humans here appear to be from pre-spaceflight civilizations," Liara said brightly. "Or... alternate iterations of the same pre-spaceflight civilization, I suppose."

It was actually nice to meet a human student who knew what a mass effect field was.

"You realized how ridiculous that sounds, right?" Joker asked. "I mean, there's no such thing as a pre-spaceflight human civilization."

Liara shot him a mildly curious look. "This island is mired in one right now," she said. "The year 2013, by human calendars. I have attempted to calculate the time difference. I believe it will be at least another century before your people discover mass effect technology."

"A century and a half," Joker told her. "In the year twenty-one forty-*cough*hrmtm*cough*" Yes, he actually cough-mumbled the year, there. History wasn't his strong suit, okay? "But that's assuming the year ISN'T 2172. Which it is."

"It is not," Liara asserted mildly. "My theory is that this island exists within some kind of singularity that... bends time and space. But I am not sure; I am hardly a physicist."

"I'm pretty sure I would have noticed a black hole on the way down," Joker told her. "You know, with the crushing and the time dilation and the way it would have eaten the planet."

"I suggest you speak to some of the other students," Liara said. Frustrated? Her? A bit. "They will assure you, it is 2013--" A pause. "--2014, now that end of the year celebrations have come to an end."

"Because they are crazy people, which is why I'm talking to you," Joker pointed out. "That's where we started from."

He offered her his hand to shake, and realized he couldn't remember the equivalent Asari gesture, or even the Asari word for "hello". His foreign languages teacher would be so upset right now. "I'm Joker, by the way -- Jeff Moreau -- and I'm pleased to meet you."

Liara had been among humans for long enough to grasp the essence of the hand-shaking thing, so she did, in fact, shake his hand. "My name is Liara T'Soni," she volunteered. "I have ceased trying to make sense of what goes on here... most of the time."

Joker nodded. "I may end up joining you on that one. I haven't lost hope yet, though -- there's got to be a rational explanation."
