Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the moddable warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Joker was saluting him. That had to be the most surreal thing Kaidan had experienced at Fandom yet. "At ease, Moreau," he said, reflexively. "You weren't-- it's a long story."

His head was already starting to hurt. Must be newbie day.

Joker was starting to get a little worried. "Do I get to know the long story, sir?" he asked. "Or the short version, even? I get the feeling it might be important."

Really unnerving without the sarcasm. And coming from a clearly teenage face.

"There is a small Alliance presence on the island for research purposes," Kaidan ventured, getting the easy stuff out of the way first. "To be specific, Specialist Samantha Traynor, who has her office at the local Portalocity branch, and myself. I'm a teacher. Staff Commander Kaidan Alenko."

The rest... did he even really want to go into the rest? He hadn't exactly appreciated it when he got this story from Jack.

The lack of sarcasm was him trying to make a good first impression, not an enduring character trait. At least that muck of the world would get back on track pretty quickly.

"Yeah. And your 'small Alliance presence' just happened to read my bio, and maybe-but-maybe-not get angry at me for being late? If you don't want to tell me what's really going on, that's fine, but don't you sit there and blow smoke up my... um."

That was more like the Joker he knew.

"We don't get a lot of people from our universe showing up on this island, J-- Moreau," Kaidan said. And here he'd been hoping to avoid the difficult parts until later. He crossed his arms. "How much has your big sibling told you?"

"You mean, that I've believed?" Joker asked because that conversation just started.

"Look I don't know what you mean by 'our universe', but I don't like how you just sort of slid that into the conversation, there."

Damn it. It'd been easier to act like Joker was a stranger back when Joker had been less... Joker at him. Squandered that position of authority real quick...

"This is a multidimensional hub. Don't ask me how it works, I'm not the scientist in charge. But I suggest you forget everything you think you know about how the world is supposed to work, because most of those things do not apply here."

"So... What does apply, here?" Joker asked. "Most importantly: are you reporting on me to Hackett or not? And if not, why were you upset about me being late?"

"Not being late," Kaidan said, running his hand over his hair.

'I know you ten years from now and you vanished about a year after our mutual friend died' seemed a little... harsh.

"Look, I'm not reporting on you to Hackett," he said finally. Then tacked on, lamely, "Just soak in the island for the week. If you've got any more questions, you can stop by my office at any time after that."

Kaidan rolled his eyes. "You really want to know what's going on here?" he said. "Trust me. You won't believe it. Maybe in a week, you will."
