Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the ~~moddable~~ warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Alana tried, she really did, but she couldn't quite repress the nose-crinkle. "That sounds ... educational."

Which was not really a quality Alana looked for in reading material, no.

"I feel it is important to learn as much about human history as I can while I am attending a human school," Liara said, closing the book and folding her hands over it.

Alana tilted her head thoughtfully, trying the idea on. "See, I kind of figure I'll pick up the important stuff," she replied. "But that's not a bad idea. Probably makes you less confused, right?"

"Sadly, there are no books covering the details of human interaction adequately," Liara admitted. "So I am still sometimes... confused. But it helps. To a degree."

"They seem okay as long as you just talk to them like people," Alana said earnestly. "I mean, some of their tech is a joke, and they get way freaked out about physical differences, but most of it's not that weird. "

And from her point of view, this was true.

"Anyhow, at least they speak Language."

"True," Liara said. She pursed her lips as she thought about it. "It would have been more awkward had I found myself among pre-first contact hanar..."

"And I'm just happy there aren't any Wreathers here," Alana said with a tiny shudder. "I like being away from that fight."

A pause. "We don't have Hanar where I'm from."

"They are a species akin to Earth jellyfish, if that means anything to you," Liara provided dutifully. "They communicate through patterns of bio-luminescence."

"Sound squishy," Alana observed helpfully. "And not like much fun to talk to, unless you can glow back at 'em."

"In my time, they have translators," Liara said, "But it took us some time to develop them."

She tilted her head. "What are... Wreathers?"

"They're horned humanoids from our moon," Alana explained, eye darkening. "There's this stupid war with us and them that's been going on for a long time. Bunch of my uncles died in it."

Seriously. Most pointless war ever.

"Ah. I am sorry to hear it," Liara said. Oh goddess, that sounded callous. "I mean-- I am sorry for your losses."

"It was a long time ago," Alana said, waving it off. "Anyhow, the one nice thing about being the only person from home here is I don't have to deal with -- any of that."

"Fandom Island does function as a haven of sorts, doesn't it?" Liara's smile was tiny. "Doubly so in your instance."

"Seems like it does for a lot of us," Alana agreed. "It's not that way for you?"

"I didn't come here willingly, and I have no way back to my people," Liara said. "My feelings are... ambiguous, by necessity."

Alana wasn't especially happy at home, but the idea of not being able to go there was a different thing entirely.

"That sucks," she said bluntly. "Portals don't go to where you're from?"

"Not in my time," Liara amended. Her smile was wry this time. "There are some people from my universe who seem to have no trouble at all - but they come from many decades into the future."

"Maybe the tech isn't invented on your side yet," Alana speculated. "But that's not gonna help if you're stuck here until you're 40."
