Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the moddable warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Victor had been in L.A. for most of the break, which meant the cold felt even more brutal to him than it normally would have. (Seriously, it was just unfair.)

He filled a plate with warm foods and launched into a mental debate on how long he should spend at the picnic to seem social. It was his last one, after all.

"Went home, too, huh?" Kathy asked, from where she was similarly bundled. "This weather isn't even fair."

How did people live like this?

"I think they just hate sun, the freaks," Victor said, slouching down lower inside his parka. "Hey, Kathy. How was your break?"

"Uhhh...mostly uneventful," she answered, not wanting to get into the...whatever-it-had-been before she'd had a chance to convince herself that the adrenaline surge had just made her sense of time go all weird. "Had to convince my mom that I wasn't going to freeze to death out here. Though now that I'm back, I'm not so sure she was wrong."

Which would put her mom at two correct freakouts. And that was almost terrifying.

"Just hung out with my friends," Victor answered lightly. "It was quiet. We got into it with a couple D-list bad guys, but that only lasted about ten seconds."

It had been pathetic, but that was about the Runaways' speed these days. Kids stopping other kids from knocking over liquor stores. Victor didn't mind the relative quiet: It gave them all a chance to heal.

"Also, your mom sounds like a smart lady."

Kathy tried not to laugh at that. She could only imagine her mom's reaction if she heard about Victor. A Hispanic boy from L.A.? She's assume he was in some kind of gang and that was before she found out about him being an android.

"She has her moments." That was the best Kathy could do.

"Oh! I nearly forgot! I'm a big sister this time around. Any advice before I go and try to explain this island to my poor little sib?"

Mrs. Li shouldn't be so prejudiced. Victor was -- oh, right, technically he was in a gang. But a gang that fought for good and didn't sell drugs, so that had to count for something, right?

"Um," he said. "Just sort of ... start by figuring out what they know and go from there? Like, the conversation I had with you was way different from the conversation I had with Vider, because absolutely nothing made sense to her. At least you knew it was 2013 and all of that."

Ha! Both her parents were pretty racist. Kathy had once sat through a tirade from her dad about how her grandfather hadn't fought against the Japanese in the war just so she could have a Playstation.

...There was a reason no one would be getting invitations to visit her family over breaks.

"This would probably be a lot easier if I had magic or something to convince him I'm not lying," Kathy said, blowing her bangs up out of her face. "Hi, I'm totally-normal-Kathy, but you should believe me anyway."

"You could always point out Pinkie Pie," Victor said helpfully. "I think that's kind of the classic move for people without powers."

"Thank goodness for her," Kathy agreed, smiling slightly. "Though now I'm wondering what powerless kids did before she showed up. Carried nipper bottles of rum around to entice the squirrels, you think?"

"That, or they tried to talk their friends into showing off," Victor suggested. "But the squirrel one's probably less likely to end with anybody freaking out. Unless someone's really afraid of squirrels, anyhow."

Which he wouldn't count out. Squirrel Girl was still a superhero, after all.

"Should we work out some kind of sign, then?" Kathy teased. "If I'm really failing to convince my newbie, you start flying around the picnic?"

"Sure, as long as you agree to help me out if some random newbie hates robots and freaks out at me," Victor bantered in return, half-serious. "But I can do the magnet thing free of charge."

It was a lot easier to ignore.

"If anyone starts making rude comments about my big brother, I'll take care of 'em," Kathy promised, also half-serious. "I'm pretty scrappy, you know."

...Okay, not really, but she knew how to deliver a lecture.

"Yeah, I know, you're the fierce one," Victor told her, laughter in his eyes. "I'll sic you on anybody who looks at me funny. Promise."

"Grr. Arg." Kathy intoned, holding up fingers that were crooked like claws. "Don't worry, Victor. I'll protect you."
